Fred's Transmission & Clutch Introduce

Fred's Transmission & Clutch, located at 51637 IN-19, Elkhart, IN 46514, USA, is an auto repair station that has carved out a niche in the specialized field of drivetrain repair, specifically focusing on transmissions and clutches. Serving the Elkhart community and surrounding areas, this establishment offers crucial services for one of the most complex and vital components of any vehicle. For inquiries and service appointments, customers can reach them at (574) 266-2144 or via mobile at +1 574-266-2144.

Environment and Specialization

As a specialized auto repair station, Fred's Transmission & Clutch's environment would typically be geared towards handling intricate transmission and clutch work. This means a facility equipped with specialized diagnostic tools for drivetrain systems, heavy-duty lifts, and dedicated workspaces for transmission disassembly and reassembly. Unlike general auto repair shops, a specialized facility like Fred's would have a team of technicians with in-depth knowledge and experience solely focused on transmissions and clutches, allowing for a higher level of expertise in these areas. The location on IN-19 suggests it's situated on a main thoroughfare, making it easily accessible for customers. The presence of a Dollar General across the street, as mentioned in a customer review, also adds a convenient landmark for those visiting the shop.

Specialized Services Offered

Fred's Transmission & Clutch's primary offerings revolve around:

  • Transmission Repair: This includes diagnosing issues with automatic and manual transmissions, addressing leaks, shifting problems, and noise complaints.
  • Clutch Repair and Replacement: Essential for manual transmission vehicles, this service covers clutch assembly inspection, repair, and complete replacement to ensure smooth gear changes.
  • Transmission Rebuilds: This is a core service, where a malfunctioning transmission is removed, disassembled, inspected, and worn or damaged components are replaced. The unit is then reassembled to factory specifications, aiming to restore it to like-new condition. This is a significant undertaking that requires specialized expertise.
  • Transmission Fluid Services: This includes flushes, filter changes, and ensuring proper fluid levels, which are crucial for the longevity and performance of a transmission. The positive customer review highlights their willingness to assist with basic fluid and hose needs in an emergency, showcasing a helpful aspect of their service.
  • Drivetrain Component Checks: Given their specialization, they would also likely inspect related drivetrain components that can impact transmission and clutch performance, such as axles and driveshafts, as evidenced by a customer review mentioning axle issues.

The specialization in transmissions and clutches suggests that while they might not handle general automotive repairs like oil changes or brake jobs, they are the go-to experts for these critical components. This focus allows them to develop deep expertise and invest in the specific tools required for complex drivetrain work.

Features and Customer Experiences

Customer experiences with Fred's Transmission & Clutch present a dichotomy, illustrating both the potential for exceptional service and areas of concern:

  • Exceptional Generosity and Expertise: One customer recounts a highly positive experience where, after a transmission line blew, an individual named Matt at Fred's Transmission & Clutch provided transmission fluid and a piece of hose free of charge, merely for a handshake and a conversation about Jeeps. This act of kindness and helpfulness in an emergency scenario left a profound impression, leading the customer to declare, "it’s rare these days to come across good hearted people like this guy!!" This highlights a strong positive aspect of their customer service, showcasing a willingness to go above and beyond, which can foster significant goodwill and future business.
  • Concerns Regarding Rebuild Quality and Warranty: In stark contrast, another customer's experience with a transmission rebuild on a 2013 Ford Escape details significant dissatisfaction. The transmission required a second rebuild within a month, and then failed again within a year, indicating potential issues with the quality or durability of the rebuild work. Furthermore, the customer reported collateral damage, including a stripped drain plug and a damaged axle during the process. The warranty offered—12,000 miles or 1 year—is perceived as "complete crap" and "ludicrous" by the customer, especially when compared to their perceived driving habits. This review raises serious concerns about the longevity of their rebuilds and the scope of their warranty, suggesting that the initial problem was not adequately resolved, leading to repeat failures and additional issues.

These contrasting reviews underscore the varied nature of customer interactions and outcomes at Fred's Transmission & Clutch. While they are capable of displaying remarkable generosity and providing immediate assistance, there appear to be inconsistencies, particularly concerning the long-term reliability of major services like transmission rebuilds and the terms of their warranty.

Promotional Information

Given the specialized nature of Fred's Transmission & Clutch, their promotion likely relies heavily on a combination of their established reputation, their direct phone contacts, and word-of-mouth referrals. The positive customer review, highlighting Matt's helpfulness, serves as an excellent, organic form of promotion, demonstrating their commitment to customer service and building relationships within the automotive community, especially among enthusiasts like Jeep owners. However, the negative review regarding the transmission rebuild and warranty issues could significantly impact their reputation, especially if such experiences are common. For a business specializing in complex and expensive repairs like transmission rebuilds, a strong and reliable warranty, along with consistent quality of work, would be the most effective long-term promotional tool. While specific advertising campaigns are not detailed, their presence as a dedicated transmission and clutch shop on a main road in Elkhart means they are a known entity for local residents and businesses seeking these specific services.

Don't ever take your vehicle here to have your transmission rebuilt! I had the transmission rebuilt in my 2013 Ford Escape in February of 2024 and I had to take it back in a month later to have the same thing done again and they stripped my drain plug and screwed up my axle in the process. Now 1 year later the transmission is doing the same thing again. They only give you the bare minimum warranty as well. It's only a 12,000 mile or 1 year warranty which is complete crap. When I questioned the warranty I was told that most people don't drive 12,000 miles in less than a year which is complete ludacris!! I am very disappointed in their work!!

They rebuilt my transmission in my truck and did a lot of other work on it and did not charge me for it. They told me they wanted it right for me and it is. The truck runs great and I pulled my camper to the campground. It made the trip with out any problems !!!!!! I can't say enough about them. Great work at a good price. My truck is old but I like it and want to keep it running for awhile.

Took my Acadia to Freds in Elkhart on 12/11 for an odd transmission skip and leak. They told me all that was needed was a fluid drain. I questioned their diagnostic and asked that they check one more time for the leak. I was going through quarts of fluid weekly. They found the hoses need replaced so I gave approval. I need set foot inside the shop until pickup and at that time I was informed of the 5% credit card fee. I had to pay with cc due to funds being tight. 1 week later I called back and told them my truck still jumps between 2nd and 3rd gear but was not able to back to them due to upcoming vacation. So this week I had a second opinion done and found out Freds misdiagnosed my transmission that they supposedly specialize in. I have tried calling there a few times and no one answers. DO NOT TAKE YOUR VEHICLE TO FREDS if you need anything besides a fluid drain. They don't know what their doing.

Experienced and friendly. I have had them fix my vehicle twice; both times it was same issue. The service is unbeatable; my car was up and running within two days. They were clear and honest with me inregards to the issue. Highly recommend.
