Performance Clinic - The Engine Company Introduce
Located at 715 N Orchard Ln, Dayton, OH 45434, USA, Performance Clinic - The Engine Company operates within the "Auto Repair Stations" category, but with a highly specialized focus: engines. This facility is dedicated to the intricate world of engine repair, rebuilding, and custom engine building, catering to a diverse clientele ranging from owners of standard daily drivers to enthusiasts with high-performance, classic, or even marine engines.
The environment at Performance Clinic - The Engine Company is fundamentally a specialized engine workshop. Given the nature of their services, which include precision machining and assembly, the facility would be equipped with advanced machinery such as a SuperFlow 901 Dyno for engine testing, and tools for tasks like cylinder boring, honing, and crankshaft grinding. The workspace is likely structured to handle delicate engine components and complex assembly processes, demanding a high level of organization and cleanliness. While specific details about a customer waiting area aren't provided, the focus is clearly on the technical aspects of engine work. However, some customer feedback indicates that front-office communication and staffing levels may present a challenge, suggesting a need for a balance between their technical expertise and customer service experience.
Performance Clinic - The Engine Company offers a comprehensive suite of services centered around the engine, aiming to provide solutions for various automotive needs, from routine maintenance to high-performance builds. Their services include:
- Custom Engine Repair & Rebuild Services: This is their core offering. They provide complete engine repair and rebuilding, suitable for transportation, racing, and even inboard marine applications. They can build assemblies using customer's existing engines, core pieces from their stock, or entirely new blocks, heads, crankshafts, and connecting rods. They also specialize in restoring original engines for classic cars and muscle cars, focusing on increasing power, reliability, and drivability.
- Machine Shop Services: A critical component of their operation, their in-house machine shop performs block prep work, cylinder boring, honing, sleeving, deck resurfacing, and "O" ringing. They also handle cylinder head pressure testing, valve grinds, valve guide replacement, and porting. Crankshaft polishing, grinding, and checking for straightness and cracks are also offered.
- Dyno Testing Services: They utilize a SuperFlow 901 Dyno to provide accurate performance data for engines, which is crucial for verifying power output and optimizing performance, especially for custom builds and race applications. This service aims to give "real answers" about an engine's capabilities.
- Camshaft Selection Consulting Services: With over 35 years of experience, they offer expert advice on camshaft selection for racing, street, or inboard marine applications, helping customers choose the right cam from brands like Comp Cams, Crower, and Manley, or providing quick special order service.
- Engine Component Services: This includes replacing components such as cylinder heads, crankshafts, timing sets, connecting rods, main bearings, oil pumps, piston rings, and oil pans. They also perform valve adjustments, camshaft replacements, front crankshaft oil seal replacement, and timing cover replacement.
- Professional Engine Installation: They offer professional engine installation services for domestic and import cars, trucks, and SUVs.
- Fuel Injection and Ignition Timing Resetting: Ensuring that these critical systems are properly calibrated after engine work.
- Nitrous Bottle Refills: A specialized service for performance enthusiasts, offering refills while customers wait.
- Chassis Consulting: For door car chassis, including advice on weight, pre-load, shocks, and instant center adjustments.
The distinguishing features of Performance Clinic - The Engine Company are primarily their deep specialization in engines and their extensive experience. They boast over 35 years of building engines and continuous dyno testing, which underpins their expertise. The ability to perform a wide range of machine work in-house, from basic street engines to high-performance race engines, sets them apart from general auto repair shops. Their focus on custom engine builds for various applications, including racing and marine, demonstrates their advanced capabilities. They also offer a standard 12-month/12,000-mile engine warranty, with an optional 3-year/36,000-mile warranty, providing some assurance to customers.
Promotional information for Performance Clinic - The Engine Company is mainly centered around their expertise and specialized services. Their website highlights their long-standing experience and their SuperFlow 901 Dyno as key advantages. The comprehensive list of engine services, from custom builds to component repairs and dyno testing, serves as their primary promotional content, appealing to customers with specific engine needs. While no explicit discount codes or current promotions are detailed in the provided information, their value proposition lies in their specialized knowledge and ability to deliver custom engine solutions. They aim to attract customers who prioritize precision, performance, and the expertise of a dedicated engine builder. Their business hours are Monday to Friday, 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM, and Saturday by appointment.
However, it is crucial to present an objective introduction, and the customer reviews provided reveal significant concerns. While their specialization in engines is evident, one detailed review outlines a highly negative experience, including issues with incorrect parts, extended delays, critical errors in engine assembly (camshaft being 180° out, then 16° retarded), and ultimately, a severe oil pressure problem and improper balance leading to bearing failure after the engine was returned. The customer felt that the shop would not rectify the issue without them pulling the engine again, a significant burden. This review also points to "shoddy work" and a lack of accountability, leading to substantial additional costs for the customer. Another review, while brief, mentions a poor experience with the receptionist's tone and highlights a perceived lack of staff (only one machinist) for a business calling itself "The Engine Company," suggesting potential capacity and customer service issues. These reviews indicate that despite their stated expertise and specialized offerings, there can be serious shortcomings in execution, quality control, and customer support, especially when dealing with complex or high-performance projects. Potential customers should weigh these experiences carefully when considering Performance Clinic - The Engine Company for their engine needs.

***EDIT: SEE BOTTOM & NEW PICS OF MORE SHODDY WORK*** Not really sure how best to rate this, so 2 it is. I'm sure they do a good job at your standard 350 Chevy, or anything that isn't too overly complex.. but this was not the case with my 400 Olds. They were behind the 8 ball from the start as the previous shop I had the engine dropped the ball on their end, so the first attempt at assembly was put on hold due to the wrong bearings ordered, and bent rods. After I was able to locate new rods and pistons I was put at the end of the line. They did however order correct bearings, new valvetrain components, etc. Once assembly began again, all seemed to be well until pickup. I was supposed to have the carburetor rebuilt and run on the dyno.. which didn't happen. The engine was run on the dyno solely to break the cam in with a carburetor they had in house, but was unable to make a pull. Once I got the engine in the car, we spent 3 days chasing our tail only to realize it was 180° out from where it should've been. I also spent a little over a year, multiple carburetors, changed intake gaskets multiple times, changed spark plug type, chasing a low vacuum/poor performance/low compression/poor timing issues only to finally break down and verify that the cam was 16° retarded. At one point I called and was told the timing set supplied did not allow the cam to be degreed, even though the cam card required it to be installed 2° advanced. They will not rectify the issue without me pulling the engine and scheduling it back in the line.. options that I don't have. So after spending thousands of dollars, this engine is currently apart in the car in my garage while we change timing sets to allow it to be degreed as it should be. In summary..if you want an assembly shop- Performance Clinic will suffice. If you want an engine builder who will make sure everything is correct.. look elsewhere. ***EDIT*** Im knocking this down to a 1 star, only because that's the lowest it'll let me give. Why? Well, after correcting the cam timing it was mildly better, but still not right. After spending another exhausting amount of hours chasing vacuum, compression, and reliability, I made the decision to pull the engine and send it to a true Oldsmobile expert. He put it on his dyno so he could see what I was fighting and noticed a huge oil pressure problem that I was not aware of. He tore it down and noticed bearings were falling out, which he suspects due to the improper balance. I had told him that the engine had a severe shake to it, but that the assertion I was given was that the cam was too big. He also noticed weld stacked on a rod cap, which in all his years of dealing with engines from high performance to low, he'd never seen that kind of "work". So now, since I definitely don't trust them to even work on a lawnmower engine..Im out the thousands of dollars they already got from me, plus the amount its going to cost to rebuild the engine yet again.

I've never had my car serviced here before but I can tell you just by calling in and speaking with their receptionist and the tone she gave me this place does not give their customers a good experience. She said they only have one machinist on their staff and they are months out in appointments at this point. I just think its funny they call themselves an engine company and they only have one person on their staff who is a machinist. If you're months out in appointments you should probably hire more help, and people who actually sound like they are excited to help people.

I'm using my wife's account to add photos for a previous post. It shows the engine stamp pad for my 1964 corvette before and after it was decked by Greg at Performance Clinic. As shown, the pad is deeply scratched, broach marks removed, and deck machining extending far into the pad. This was after I clearly stated that the pad needs to remain undamaged during decking as this is the original motor for a beautifully restored car. Greg definitely knows better than this with his many years of experience and prior comments about another customer sending a block out-of-state to add broach marks to simulate an original motor. (He understands the need to keep the pad surfaces original.) When confronted, Greg tried to say that the scratches were already there. (Can't be as the scratches are on top of the decked portion of the pad.) I'm still sick over this, but will get over it eventually.

This shop is very unprofessional and not fully transparent. We dropped off an engine based on the prices we saw ONLINE! The pricing looked very reasonable and affordable. So we gave them a chance. We show up to drop off this engine and even asked the guy "how close is your ONLINE pricing" he replied "it's pretty close" We assumed "pretty close" would be like taxes and Maybe 50-60 dollar difference based on labor. Come to find out they never disclosed to us that their ONLINE pricing is from 2018!!!!! We got our bill and they weren't even finished and it was TRIPLE!!!! so we raised all kinds of hell. The rude lady that works there wanted to act like it was our fault we didn't know the pricing by saying "well those are old prices from 2018" we were thinking how do we know that, if you never tell someone!!!! The professional thing to do is disclose from the START "sir I want you to be aware, our online pricing is incorrect, if you wanna follow me inside and we can show you true to date numbers and see if you still would like to use our services" THATS WHAT YOU DO!!!!! Especially people who are trying to enjoy this hobby on a budget!! Not just spring a 1500 dollar unfinished bill on them. For a 4 cylinder. I Highly recommend you stay away from this company. The gentleman also disclosed if you leave your parts there for to long, he will sell them. DO NOT USE THIS COMPANY!!!!!

Family business of Hot Rod Experts... Love to see the dragsters on the property. Dave is rebuilding my Vortec 383 and took plenty of time to go over what I wanted and then Dave explained what was was better or not. His live for motors is Amazing. Soon my truck will come home and I will come back with an update. Well my High Performance 383 engine runs smoothly not a bad way to keep my 1996 Chevy running... Thank You All...
