Hastings Race Engine Introduce
Hastings Race Engine, located at 614 S Cannon Blvd, Shelbyville, TN 37160, USA, operates as a highly specialized Auto Repair Station, focusing specifically on engine building and automotive machining. Unlike general auto repair shops that handle a wide range of vehicle issues, Hastings Race Engine caters to a niche market of performance enthusiasts, custom car builders, and individuals requiring precise engine work. Their name itself, "Race Engine," indicates a dedication to high-performance and precision engineering, which sets them apart in the automotive repair landscape.
The environment at Hastings Race Engine would primarily be a machine shop rather than a typical service garage. One would expect to see specialized equipment for engine work, such as cylinder boring machines, crankshaft grinders, cylinder head surfacing machines, valve grinding equipment, and various precision measuring tools. The workspace would be meticulously organized, reflecting the precision required in engine building. While there might be an office or reception area for customer consultations, the core of the business operates in a highly technical and controlled environment dedicated to engine components. The atmosphere is likely one of focused craftsmanship, where attention to detail is paramount for achieving desired performance and reliability.
As an Auto Repair Station specializing in engines, Hastings Race Engine offers a precise and specialized set of services. These include:
- Engine Building: This is a core service, assembling engines from individual components, often to custom specifications for performance applications. This involves careful selection and fitting of pistons, connecting rods, crankshafts, camshafts, and cylinder heads.
- Automotive Machining: This encompasses a range of high-precision operations on engine blocks, cylinder heads, and crankshafts. Specific machining services would include:
- Cylinder Boring: Increasing the diameter of cylinder bores to accommodate larger pistons, or to remove wear and damage.
- Cylinder Honing: Creating a cross-hatch pattern on cylinder walls for proper piston ring seating and lubrication.
- Cylinder Head Resurfacing: Machining cylinder head surfaces to ensure a flat and true mating surface for the head gasket, preventing leaks.
- Valve Seat Grinding/Replacement: Machining valve seats for optimal valve sealing and performance.
- Crankshaft Grinding/Polishing: Machining crankshaft journals to bring them back to specification or for custom clearances.
- Block Decking: Machining the top surface of the engine block to ensure flatness.
- Engine Inspection and Assessment: Evaluating engine components to determine their condition and what work is needed for rebuilds or performance upgrades. This service is critical for advising customers on the best course of action.
- Performance Engine Modifications: For race or high-performance applications, they would likely offer custom porting, camshaft selection advice, and other modifications to optimize engine power and torque.
The features of Hastings Race Engine, as indicated by customer reviews, point to a highly knowledgeable team with extensive experience. The positive review states, "Jim and James are top notch automotive machinist & engine builders. Lots of knowledge that could have only been learned from many years of experience." This highlights the depth of their expertise and the value of seasoned professionals in this highly technical field. Their capability to handle complex engine builds and machining tasks is a significant feature, attracting customers who require precision work that goes beyond standard automotive repairs.
However, a critical review raises significant concerns regarding trust, communication, and the quality of work. This customer's experience describes being "charged for a bore and just did a hone job," leading to having "paid twice for an over bore" and issues with a "master rebuild kit with 40 over pistons" that no longer fit the block. This highlights potential discrepancies in service delivery versus what was agreed upon and charged. While the initial interaction regarding being "3 months backed" was understandable, the subsequent revelation of the block still being at standard bore after being charged for a .040 overbore is a serious issue for a specialized machine shop. This points to a potential challenge in consistency, quality control, or accurate communication about the work performed, which is critical in a field that relies heavily on precision and trust. For any Auto Repair Station, particularly one dealing with high-value engine components, transparency and accountability are paramount.
Promotional information for a specialized shop like Hastings Race Engine typically doesn't involve widespread public advertising like a general auto repair shop. Instead, it would focus on building a reputation within the performance automotive community and through direct client engagement. This might include:
- Showcasing Completed Projects: Photos or videos of custom engines built or specific machining work performed, highlighting their capabilities and the quality of their craftsmanship.
- Participation in Automotive Events: Attending local car shows, races, or enthusiast gatherings to network and demonstrate expertise.
- Testimonials (Positive): Highlighting satisfied customers who have experienced significant performance gains or reliable engine builds.
- Specialized Forums and Online Communities: Engaging with online groups dedicated to performance automotive, engine building, or specific car models that might require their services.
- Direct Consultation: Emphasizing their willingness to consult with clients on custom engine projects and offer expert advice.
In conclusion, Hastings Race Engine at 614 S Cannon Blvd, Shelbyville, TN 37160, operates as a highly specialized Auto Repair Station dedicated to engine building and precision automotive machining. Its environment is that of a professional machine shop, equipped for intricate engine work. The primary features are the deep knowledge and extensive experience of its automotive machinists. However, the conflicting customer reviews highlight a critical discrepancy in service delivery and billing, which is a serious concern for a business built on precision and trust. While their expertise is praised, the importance of consistent quality and transparent communication for such highly specialized services cannot be overstated.

I had a 283 sbc that I had checked out , told him to do what ever it needed to get it back to rebuildable condition. He said it needed to be bored 40 over, no big deal. Now we fast forward a few years later, I have decided to go a slightly different direction with this block, it's been in good storage for a few years, I take it back up there for some more fine tune work, he says hes 3 months backed, also no big deal and I completely understand, so I take it to another machine shop, in Nashville, so today I get a call from them telling me that this block is still at standard bore , so now I have paid twice for an over bore. This wouldn't be that big of a deal if I hadn't already bought a master rebuild kit with 40 over pistons. I wouldn't trust this machinist, he charged me for a bore and just did a hone job

Called to ask Jim the status on a head and he cussed at me. Then got the head back and a valve stills leaks. Find someone different to do your work.

Jim was very helpful and found exactly what we were looking for. Called us back the same day. Great service

Jim is a great guy. If you've got a race engine or just a those engine, this is who you go see.
