Gattshall's TRANSMISSIONS

This review is a very long time coming. About 7 years ago I had called all over Jackson county trying to find a non-dealership repair shop that could work on my car’s transmission. Every other place in the area I called said they don’t do transmissions despite their ads saying they do. I finally called Gattshall’s and the guy that answered the phone said he had a strong hunch on what was wrong with my transmission and that the previous (Guess)timate could very likely be incorrect. It was strange to me though because I told him exactly what the last place’s (dealership) specialist heard about my transmission and the specialist there knew right away how big of a job this repair was and didn’t open up anything as to avoid charging me quite a bit just for an estimate. So for Gattshall’s to hear the same thing and have a very different hunch was kind of surprising. Gattshall’s also said that because I was having my car towed from a dealership in Ann Arbor to this shop at my expense instead of initially their’s, that they would cut me a break on the assessment. So with that they assessed things a little but called me asking me if I’d be ok with them opening up my transmission to make a definitive diagnosis of things. They still insisted on the likelihood of their hunch and how it would be a much cheaper job totaling around $750 but opening the transmission was gonna run about $390. Regardless of the conclusion the $390 would be built into the total job, but their insistency on their hunch was strong and a huge difference from the previous $3K+ (guess)timate from the dealership. I agreed and 2 hours later they said my previous (guess)timate was actually correct (cracked transfer case) and it’d be around $3K for them to do the job too. About the same price as a dealership!! The car wasn’t even worth $3K in perfect condition so I wasn’t allowing them to perform the job. I asked about our deal and they acted like $390 was already a great deal. I made it clear I’d be taking them to court as this sounded like a scheme only to make them a quick buck without having to actually perform a repair. They decided they didn’t want that outcome though and offered me a $90 discount to keep things out or the courts. I paid it (like an idiot) and wished I hadn’t because afterward my car would only intermittently roll due to the damage that was done opening my transmission up. I had the car flat-bedded to my residence where it then sat for about 5 years until it was finally sold to a scrapper for less money than I paid Gattshall’s. I can’t emphasize enough on how much you should avoid this place even if all of this was 7 years ago.
