I was shopping for last-minute detailing supplies and noticed that the local Advance had both items in stock. As I browsed the website, Advance Auto offered me a coupon to buy online and pick up in-store. Considering I was less than a mile from the store, I thought this was unnecessary and figured I could use the code when picking up the items. At the store, I asked if I could use a promotion code I received online in-store. In response, I was told, " I don't know, I can try. Usually, they don't work, though. Is it a coupon for something good or just 20%? Probably ain't worth it if it's 20%, right?" the person's follow-up solution was "You can just order it online, and we'll give it to you." at the moment, I waived that offer and paid full price. After leaving the store, I returned the items and ordered them from Amazon. The return went smoothly. The reason for the return was not in the transaction, and I didn't explain. The fact that I can use a coupon online and pick up an item in thirty minutes but can't do the same thing in person is baffling to me. The premise behind "buy-online-pick-up-in-store" is not to blow out margins when offering sales and promotions. However, those savings are translated by shipping the item to the store, not picking it up the same day. It cost Advance Auto more in payroll than the $10 savings I would have seen from my purchase. The "rub" from today is that I would've accepted an actual explanation. Advance Auto's policy is not to honor online coupons in-store, period. Not "Well, if you order it online now and wait a minute, you can just take these." What's the rationale behind that? Is it to capture my info? Advance already has my info; I used it when I attempted to buy the item(s) in-store. Is it to train me to use the website? Is it to justify paying for and developing software that facilitates "buy-online-pick-up-in-store"? I don't know, and after today, I don't care. My life lesson and takeaway from this is to stop shopping with Advance Auto. That individual customers are a secondary bonus from having a dealership/repair network. After today, if I was driving cross country and broke down in some godless barren place (think Iowa) with no other auto parts store around but Advance Auto and needed parts to repair my vehicle, I would sooner rent a motel room or bribe a gas station manager to sleep in their parking lot for four days to receive an order from Rock Auto or O'rileys than shop at Advance Auto Parts.
