Performance Engine & Machine Introduce

Performance Engine & Machine, located at 3691 S Country Club Rd, Tucson, AZ 85713, USA, operates within the specialized niche of engine services under the broad "Auto Repair Stations" platform category. You can reach them at (520) 884-1191 or via mobile at +1 520-884-1191. This establishment sets itself apart from general repair shops by focusing on the intricate and highly specialized field of engine diagnostics, repair, rebuilding, and performance enhancement. Their services are geared towards customers seeking not just a fix, but often a significant upgrade or restoration of their vehicle's powertrain.

As an "Auto Repair Station," Performance Engine & Machine provides critical services that underpin the functionality of a vehicle. However, their specific area of expertise—engines and machining—places them in a category that requires a higher level of technical skill, specialized equipment, and in-depth knowledge of internal combustion engines. This makes them a destination for enthusiasts, restorers, and anyone facing complex engine issues that go beyond standard bolt-on repairs.

Environment

The environment at Performance Engine & Machine, as suggested by the customer review, appears to be a highly specialized workshop. The mention of sharing a building with a "Speed Shop" indicates a facility dedicated to high-performance and precision automotive work. Such an environment would typically include:

  • Machine Shop Area: Equipped with various heavy-duty machinery for engine block work (boring, honing, decking), cylinder head work (valve jobs, surfacing), crankshaft grinding, and balancing. This area would likely be organized, clean, and temperature-controlled to ensure precision during machining processes.
  • Engine Assembly Clean Room: A dedicated, clean area for assembling engines, minimizing contamination during the critical build phase.
  • Dynamometer (Dyno) Room: As highlighted in the positive review, the presence of a dyno is a significant feature. This is a soundproofed room with specialized equipment to test and tune engines under load, measure horsepower and torque, and simulate real-world driving conditions for break-in and performance verification.
  • Vehicle Bays/Lifts: While their core is engine work, the mention of "engine pulled by the Speed Shop" and reinstallation implies bays equipped with lifts and tools for engine removal and installation.
  • Parts Storage: An organized system for storing engine components, both new and those removed from customer vehicles.

The overall atmosphere would be professional and technical, indicative of the high-precision work being performed. While the positive review praises the experience, the negative review suggests that communication and internal processes might sometimes fall short, leading to customer dissatisfaction. This highlights the importance of clear communication and transparency in such specialized services.

Services

Performance Engine & Machine's services are highly specialized, focusing on the heart of a vehicle – its engine. Their offerings include:

  • Engine Rebuilding: This is a core service, involving the complete disassembly, inspection, cleaning, machining, and reassembly of an engine. The goal is often to restore an engine to factory specifications or, as noted in the positive review, make it "BETTER THAN NEW!" This includes work on engine blocks, cylinder heads, crankshafts, and connecting rods.
  • Engine Machining Services: They perform precision machining operations essential for engine rebuilding, such as:
    • Cylinder boring and honing
    • Crankshaft grinding and polishing
    • Cylinder head resurfacing and valve seat grinding
    • Block decking
    • Connecting rod reconditioning
    • Engine balancing (crankshaft, pistons, connecting rods) for smoother operation and higher performance.
  • Custom Engine Builds: For performance enthusiasts, they likely offer custom engine builds tailored to specific power goals or racing applications. This involves selecting specialized components (e.g., high-performance camshafts, pistons, rods, cylinder heads). The positive review's "rebuilt, BETTER THAN NEW!" and the involvement of a "Speed Shop" strongly suggest custom builds.
  • Engine Diagnostics and Troubleshooting: While primarily a machine shop, the context of engine rebuilding implies an ability to diagnose complex engine issues that lead to the need for a rebuild.
  • Dynamometer (Dyno) Testing and Tuning: A significant service, allowing for precise measurement of engine power output and detailed tuning to optimize performance and ensure proper break-in procedures are followed. The customer review explicitly mentions being present for the dyno run and break-in.
  • Engine Removal and Installation (potentially through a partner): The positive review indicates that the "Speed Shop" pulls and reinstalls the engine, suggesting a collaborative approach or a bundled service where the machine work is done by Performance Engine & Machine, and the R&I (removal & installation) is handled by the co-located partner.
  • Component-Specific Repairs: Beyond full engine rebuilds, they may also perform repairs on individual engine components like cylinder heads (e.g., crack repair, porting) or crankshafts.
Features

Key features that define Performance Engine & Machine include:

  • Specialized Expertise: Their primary feature is a deep and focused expertise in internal combustion engines and precision machining. This sets them apart from general mechanics.
  • Advanced Equipment: The presence of a dyno and implied machine shop equipment signifies investment in advanced tools necessary for high-quality engine work.
  • Performance Orientation: The name "Performance Engine & Machine" and the dyno testing strongly indicate a focus on optimizing engine performance, not just repairing them. This appeals to classic car owners, hot rodders, and racers.
  • Customization Capabilities: The ability to rebuild engines "BETTER THAN NEW" and involvement with a "Speed Shop" suggests they can tailor engine specifications to meet specific customer demands, whether for power, reliability, or specific vehicle applications.
  • Collaborative Service Model: The partnership with the "Speed Shop" to handle engine removal and installation offers a comprehensive solution to the customer, even if distinct entities perform different parts of the work.
  • Customer Involvement (for Dyno): Inviting customers to be present for the dyno run, as described in the positive review, adds a layer of transparency and engagement to the service.

However, it's crucial to acknowledge the conflicting customer experiences. The positive review highlights exceptional results and service, while the negative review points to severe issues, including alleged part switching, improper assembly, and a lack of resolution. This disparity suggests that while they possess the capability for excellent work, consistency in service delivery, part management, and customer communication might be areas for improvement.

Promotional Information

Based on their services and observed features, Performance Engine & Machine would likely engage in the following promotional strategies:

  • Highlighting Niche Expertise: Emphasizing their specialization in engine rebuilding, machining, and performance tuning to attract customers seeking high-level engine work for classic cars, performance vehicles, or complex repairs.
  • Showcasing Success Stories: Featuring testimonials (like the positive Mustang review) and before/after pictures or videos of rebuilt engines and dyno results to demonstrate their capabilities and quality of work.
  • Dyno Services Promotion: Actively promoting their dyno testing and tuning services as a standalone offering or as part of a rebuild package, appealing to those looking to optimize their vehicle's power.
  • Targeting Enthusiast Communities: Advertising in automotive enthusiast magazines, online forums, and attending local car shows or racing events to reach their target audience.
  • Partnerships with Other Shops: Strengthening their collaboration with the "Speed Shop" and potentially other general repair shops who might refer complex engine work to them.
  • Transparency and Communication: Proactively addressing concerns about transparency in parts usage and ensuring clear communication regarding repair processes and warranty terms to build trust, especially in light of negative feedback.
  • Service Guarantees/Warranties: Clearly stating warranties on their engine rebuilds and machining work to provide customer confidence.

In conclusion, Performance Engine & Machine is a highly specialized "Auto Repair Station" in Tucson, dedicated to comprehensive engine services, from precision machining and rebuilding to performance tuning via dynamometer. Their ability to deliver "BETTER THAN NEW" results for complex engine projects, as highlighted by one customer, positions them as a valuable resource for classic car owners, performance enthusiasts, and those requiring in-depth engine repairs. However, potential customers should be aware of the mixed customer experiences, suggesting that clear communication and meticulous attention to detail throughout the entire service process are paramount for consistent satisfaction.

Performance Engine & Machine Customer Reviews

Steve, at Performance Engine and Machine, is awesome. Our 65 Mustang needed some attention. He had the engine pulled by the Speed Shop. They share a building BTW. They got it on a stand and rebuilt, BETTER THAN NEW! Dyno was done, and they had us be there for that. Did the break in on the Dyno. Speed Shop reinstalled engine then it was final tuned. They got our breaks working right and even wash the car. We seriously could not be happier. Thank you Steve and all who were involved.

This place claimed to change the parts on my engine and did not instead he took my good block and switched it from 4 bolt main to 2 bolt main. He didn't put the pin in the piston which in turn messed up the block. In reality none of the inside parts matter when he took my block. I want this resolved!! Do not use this place!
