Pep Boys Introduce

Pep Boys is a venerable name in the automotive aftermarket, standing as a prominent and widely recognized "Auto Repair Station" that combines comprehensive vehicle services with a retail component for auto parts and accessories. Founded in 1921, Pep Boys has evolved into a nationwide chain, providing a dual-service model that caters to both "do-it-yourself" (DIY) enthusiasts and "do-it-for-me" (DIFM) customers who prefer professional service. This integrated approach positions Pep Boys as a one-stop shop for a vast majority of automotive needs, from routine maintenance to complex repairs, alongside the sale of essential vehicle components.

The environment at a typical Pep Boys location is designed to facilitate both retail sales and automotive service operations seamlessly. Upon entering, customers are usually greeted by a retail showroom stocked with a wide array of auto parts, including tires, batteries, fluids, accessories, and performance parts. This retail section is generally well-organized, allowing customers to easily find products for their DIY projects or browse for vehicle enhancements. Adjacent to or separate from the retail space are the service bays, which are the heart of the "Auto Repair Station" aspect. These bays are equipped with modern diagnostic tools, vehicle lifts, tire mounting and balancing machines, and other specialized equipment necessary for a broad spectrum of automotive repairs. The service areas are managed by professional staff, including ASE-certified technicians, who work in a structured environment focused on efficiency and safety. While individual store layouts may vary, the general atmosphere aims to be accessible and reassuring, providing a clear division between the retail shopping experience and the professional service area.

Pep Boys offers an extensive range of services and goods for sale, solidifying its position as a comprehensive "Auto Repair Station." Their service offerings cover virtually every aspect of vehicle maintenance and repair:

A notable innovation is the Pep Boys Mobile Crew service, where fully equipped vans with expert technicians can perform routine maintenance and safety-related services on-location at workplaces or residential complexes, further enhancing convenience for fleet and individual customers. The company also highlights its long-standing commitment to customer trust, offering a Nationwide Warranty on parts and services, which provides peace of mind for vehicle owners. I dropped my vehicle off in the morning on 4/17 after driving over a screw. I was told it'd be ready either that day or the next, depending on when tires arrived. The next day I hadn't heard anything, so I called at 12p, and was told they just got the tires and the car would be ready by 2p. The shop called me at 1:40 to confirm I just wanted the fronts replaced, and not the rears in addition. I confirmed that was the case, they said it would be ready soon. I called again at 3 after not hearing anything, as I needed to leave by 3:30 for a job that was an hour away. I informed them of this on the phone and double checked that my car would be ready on time. They confirmed it would be. At 3:30 I called again, and was transferred to someone that told me that there was a miscommunication and that only rears were ordered, not fronts. So they had to send someone back out to get the right tires. I hung up out of frustration. The original person called me back and told me that the delivery driver had taken a wrong turn, and there was never anything to do with the wrong tires being ordered. That same person told me the car would be ready by 4. The car wasn't ready until 4:30, which was when I needed to arrive to the job site. Now I've received two different stories, the original times were not delivered upon, and I'm late for a job because I was counting on this. If the shop had been honest with me in the first place, I would have been able to plan accordingly. It cost approximately $60 in uber fees and SEPTA costs to get to the job. The experience was remarkably frustrating. After a bit of haggling during pickup I was given a 10% discount. I've been going to this pep boys for a few years but after this experience I won't be going back.

I highly don't recommend going here if you are a female or someone who knows very little about cars. I went here for an oil change and a tire rotation with a scheduled appoint early in the morning. With my appointment scheduled it took over 2 hours for them to complete. I received a phone call stating I needed 2 new tires and a serpentine belt which would be over $850 all together. My car was just bought a year ago so I told them it should be under warranty and I just want to pay for the oil change. The guy seemed a little defensive when I said I didn't want the belt and informed me it was dangerous to drive on. I still denied it because my car should be under warranty. Also the tires were brand new (Michelin) as it's something I negotiated when buying the car. After taking it home, my neighbor who works on cars for living looked at it and he said the serpentine belt looks brand new and doesn't look frayed at all. I was still a little skeptical because of how much of a big deal pep boys made about it so I also did my own research and looked at videos on when to know if the belt needs to be replaced and mine looks like it's in perfect condition. I plan to also take it to my car dealer with the warranty, but I guarantee they are going to say it's just fine (yes, I bought the car used but it's a 2022 and has less than 60,000 so there's no reason the belt should need to be replaced.) (I will take down this post if for some odd reason they do say it needs replaced)... I will say my tires do look a little worn down as I drive constantly in the city for living. With that said, I asked if they rotated the tires and they said no because they wont rotate them if I need new ones. I later looked at my statement and they still charged me for rotating them (This is the second time I went to a pepboys asking for a tire rotation, for them not to do it, but still charged me for it (the first time being at the N broad street location)).

Extremely unprofessional. Did not honor appointment time. Made appointment for oil change, tire rotation and wiper replacement. when I dropped off car, they said one car was ahead of me, they would try to finish it that day but might need to hold it until the morning. Did not even look at car until noon the day after my appointment. Called to say they were almost done an hour later. I got no update so called back an hour later and then they said no wipers were in stock and they had to order them. Didn’t even fill washer fluid despite my request at drop off and inspection saying they were fine despite dashboard alert saying low. Also didn’t even fully close hood at pickup, noticed as I was driving home. Will never go back.

Had a 10 o'clock appointment for a wait while service. Was told I needed a diagnosis test done. 2 pm rolls around and my car is in the same exact spot that I parked it in. I ask what's going on as it's been 4 hours now and the car hasn't even been looked at. I was told others had appointments as well however I'm the only one waiting not dropping off and my appointment was 4 hours ago. Which means I won't even be able to get it diagnosed and serviced the same day. I just asked for my keys back and left. Just save yourself the headache unless you have absolutely nothing to do for the rest of the day or the next day as well. Since it takes over 4 hours for the car to not even be able to be looked at.

I strongly advise against utilizing this establishment if you value your vehicle and well-being. On Friday, January 31st, 2025, I brought my vehicle in for brake and air intake hose replacement. Upon retrieval, I observed illuminated dashboard warning lights, though I initially dismissed them due to the late hour and my early work schedule. The following morning, en route to my place of employment, I observed a decrease in my vehicle's performance; it failed to exceed 3000 RPM. Post-work, I returned the vehicle to Pep Boys for a secondary inspection. Their assessment revealed an internal computer malfunction, deemed irreparable by their technicians. The subsequent day was marked by considerable concern regarding this unexpected development. Upon personal inspection, I discovered a crucial oversight: the mechanic had neglected to reconnect the MAF sensor following air intake hose replacement. Reconnection resolved the dashboard warning lights, providing temporary relief. However, several hours later, I detected an unusual humming emanating from the braking system, accompanied by smoke and a burning odor after extended drives. Pep Boys declined to address this subsequent issue. This experience was characterized by substandard service and unacceptable customer support. I strongly advise against utilizing their services.
