Big Sal's Racing Engines Introduce

For automotive enthusiasts and racers in St. James, NY, and the surrounding areas seeking highly specialized engine work, **Big Sal's Racing Engines** operates as a unique and focused entity within the Auto Repair Stations category. Located at 648 Middle Country Rd # 8, St James, NY 11780, USA, this establishment caters specifically to the demanding world of high-performance and racing motors. They can be contacted by phone at (631) 863-1260 or via mobile at +1 631-863-1260, providing a direct line for inquiries about custom engine builds and performance modifications.

Operating distinctly within the Auto Repair Stations category, Big Sal's Racing Engines is not a general repair shop for everyday vehicle maintenance. Instead, it is a highly specialized facility that focuses on the intricate and demanding task of **custom engine building**, particularly for racing and high-performance applications. This specialization involves selling highly customized "goods" (the built engines themselves) and providing expert "services" related to engine assembly, modification, and sometimes even tuning. This positions them as an elite, niche auto repair station, catering to clients who require horsepower figures and performance characteristics far beyond standard factory specifications. The complexity of their work, which involves precision machining, component selection, and assembly to achieve specific performance goals, firmly places them within the realm of highly skilled automotive repair and modification services, albeit for a very specific segment of the market.

The environment at Big Sal's Racing Engines would primarily be that of a dedicated engine building and machine shop. While specific details about the physical layout or customer waiting areas are not provided, the nature of their work implies a sophisticated setup. This would include specialized machinery for engine block preparation, cylinder head work, crankshaft balancing, and precise assembly. The environment is likely focused on cleanliness and precision, as even minute contaminants or misalignments can drastically affect engine performance and longevity. The interactions, as gleaned from reviews, suggest a hands-on approach where "Big Sal and his staff" are directly involved in the builds and customer communication. One positive review highlights Sal's willingness to "help me Tune it," suggesting a collaborative and supportive environment, especially for experienced racers who understand the nuances of engine performance. However, for potential customers, it's important to understand that this is a highly technical environment, and a general understanding of engine specifications and performance expectations would be beneficial for effective communication.

The core services offered by Big Sal's Racing Engines revolve around high-performance internal combustion engines. Their primary service is **custom engine building**, as evidenced by the customer who had them "build several motors" and specifically a "small block Chevy motor." This involves:

  • Block Machining and Preparation: Ensuring engine blocks meet precise specifications for performance and durability.
  • Cylinder Head Work: Porting, polishing, and valve train optimization for maximum airflow.
  • Rotating Assembly Balancing and Assembly: Precision balancing of crankshafts, connecting rods, and pistons for smooth operation at high RPMs.
  • Component Selection: Advising and sourcing appropriate performance parts (camshafts, carburetors, intake manifolds, etc.) to meet specific horsepower goals or racing indices.
  • Engine Assembly: Meticulous assembly of all engine components to exacting tolerances.
  • Engine Tuning Assistance: One review specifically mentions Sal helping to "Tune it," indicating a level of support in optimizing the built engine for its intended application, which is crucial for maximizing performance.

While the focus is on "racing engines," the services are applicable to any high-performance build, whether for drag racing, circuit racing, or high-powered street applications. Their specialization means they are equipped to handle complex engine dynamics that general auto repair shops typically do not.

Several key features define Big Sal's Racing Engines, though some present a mixed picture based on customer feedback. On the positive side, a significant feature is their **capability to build high-performance, specialized motors** that can achieve specific racing indices, as demonstrated by the small block Chevy that "ran the 850 index." This highlights their technical expertise in performance engine construction. Another strong feature is their **willingness to go "above and beyond" for customers**, including offering assistance with post-build tuning. This indicates a commitment to customer support that extends beyond the initial engine assembly. The long-term relationship implied by "built several motors" suggests consistency and trust for some clientele. However, a notable feature that emerged from a second review is **inconsistent performance delivery versus advertised horsepower claims**. A customer reported a significant discrepancy between the promised "little over 450 hp" and the actual "less than 290" rear-wheel horsepower on a dyno. This raises concerns about the reliability of their power output claims and the consistency of their builds. While the customer noted they were "great to deal with," this specific outcome is a critical aspect for a performance engine builder. Therefore, while their specialized skills are a feature, the variability in performance outcomes needs to be considered by potential clients.

Regarding promotional information, Big Sal's Racing Engines primarily relies on word-of-mouth promotion within the racing and performance automotive community, as evidenced by the strong recommendation from a satisfied customer. The narrative of building engines that achieve specific racing goals, such as running the "850 index" and needing to "slow the car down," serves as a powerful testament to their capabilities for a niche audience. This direct testimonial from a successful racer acts as their most compelling advertisement. The willingness to "go above and beyond" and assist with tuning also serves as an implicit promotion of their comprehensive customer support. However, the contrasting review, which explicitly states a failure to meet advertised horsepower and a "sluggish slow" engine, also acts as a piece of promotional information, albeit a negative one, that potential customers would consider. This highlights the importance for Big Sal's Racing Engines to consistently deliver on their performance promises. For local users in St. James, NY, interested in custom racing engines, the best approach would be to contact them directly, discuss specific power goals and budgets, and perhaps inquire about dyno sheets or references from recent builds to ensure alignment with their expectations. While no explicit discount promotions were found, their reputation within the racing community and the direct experiences of their customers serve as their primary promotional channels.

I used these guys years ago 2010 to build a small block Chevy. It was advertised little over 450 hp Sal told me. The dyno after the build to the rear wheel horsepower was with less than 290 With a typical turbo 350. Engine was sluggish slow not great. They were great to deal with but the advertised build that I wanted never materialized. Hope they’ve done better since then.

Don’t go here, guy had my engine for two months after I was told one week. Block work was never done, never got block back, was lie after lie. Jerked me around and left me high and dry with no motor. Awful experience.
