Modern gas stations, particularly those under a well-known brand like Sunoco, typically offer a variety of services to cater to the diverse needs of their customers. UL:
-
Fuel Products: As a primary function, this Sunoco station provides various grades of gasoline. Sunoco is known for its "Top Tier" fuel, which meets higher detergency standards to keep engines cleaner and optimize performance. Some Sunoco locations also offer higher octane options like Sunoco 94 Octane, the highest octane available on the market, which can be a draw for certain vehicle types.
-
Convenience Store: Most Sunoco stations include a convenience store, offering a range of products for quick purchases. This typically includes snacks, cold beverages, coffee, and potentially some basic automotive supplies like oil or wiper fluid. The availability of these items makes it a useful stop beyond just fueling up.
-
Accepts Various Payment Methods: For customer convenience, you can generally expect to pay for fuel and in-store purchases using major credit and debit cards. Sunoco also offers its own branded payment options and loyalty programs, which can provide additional savings.
Every local business has its unique characteristics, and gas stations are no exception. Based on general information about Sunoco and available customer feedback for this particular location, here are some features and highlights to consider. It is important to note that customer experiences can be highly subjective and some past reviews indicate areas that may need attention.
UL:
-
Sunoco Brand Quality: Sunoco is a long-standing and well-recognized name in the fuel industry, often associated with quality fuels, including their "Top Tier" gasoline and race fuels. This can instill confidence in the fuel quality for many drivers.
-
Potential for Competitive Pricing: While gas prices fluctuate, Sunoco stations often aim to remain competitive within their local markets. Checking current gas prices through apps or websites before your visit is always recommended.
-
Self-Service Pumps: Like most gas stations in Pennsylvania, this Sunoco offers self-service pumps. It's crucial to remember that Pennsylvania law requires that there be at least one attendant or supervisor on duty while the station is open to the public, whose primary function is to supervise and control the dispensing of fuel. Furthermore, if a hold-open nozzle is used, the person fueling must remain within ten feet and within plain sight of the refueling point during the operation.
Customer reviews provide mixed insights regarding this specific location. One customer reported an instance where the pumps were operational early on a Sunday morning, but the store itself was locked with no attendant visible, raising concerns about compliance with Pennsylvania law regarding attendant presence during fuel dispensing. This is a serious concern, as state regulations (34 Pa. Code § 14a.115) explicitly state, "There shall be at least one attendant or supervisor on duty while the station is open to the public. The primary function of the attendant or supervisor shall be to supervise, observe and control the dispensing of flammable or combustible liquids."
Another significant area of concern highlighted by customer feedback is the condition of the restrooms. One review describes the bathroom as a "legitimate health hazard" and "the WORST public restroom I’ve ever seen," citing cleanliness issues that suggest a lack of maintenance over a long period. While customers acknowledge that some individuals may misuse public facilities, the responsibility for maintaining cleanliness falls on the business. This is an important consideration for travelers or anyone expecting a basic level of hygiene.
Sunoco, as a national brand, frequently offers various promotions and loyalty programs designed to provide savings and rewards to its customers. For the Sunoco Gas Station at 531 S Main St in Wilkes-Barre, local users can potentially take advantage of these programs.
One of the most prominent programs is Sunoco Go Rewards®. By downloading the Sunoco app and signing up, customers can often save per gallon on fuel purchases. For example, some promotions offer 3¢ off per gallon just for using the app, with additional savings (such as 10¢ off per gallon for a limited time when linking a bank account to Sunoco Pay). These savings accumulate with every fuel purchase made through the app, providing consistent value.
Additionally, Sunoco partners with various grocery store loyalty programs, such as Weis Gas Rewards in Pennsylvania. Customers who shop at participating grocery stores can earn points on their grocery purchases, which can then be redeemed for discounts on fuel at Sunoco stations. For instance, earning 100 Weis Rewards Points might translate to 10¢ off per gallon. It’s always recommended to check signage at the station, the Sunoco website, or the specific grocery store's loyalty program details to confirm current offers and participation at this Wilkes-Barre location.

Sunoco Gas Station Customer Reviews
Went to the station early Sunday morning. Pumps were open sign on the store said open. Was able to get gas using a credit card. Went to get a receipt and found the store is locked. No attendant on duty. These people are pumping gas with no attendant on duty, which is against the Pennsylvania law. This place is dangerous. An accident waiting to happen. Stay away.

Either maintain the bathroom or close it up! Throw away the key because it’s a legitimate health hazard in there. Probably the WORST public restroom I’ve ever seen. I doubt that it was cleaned within the last decade. The floor is so covered with urine and excrement. Make sure you have your shots before asking for that key. Some customers do come and trash the bathrooms, I get that, but it’s your business and it needs cleaned up or put out of order. Hire someone to come with a hazmat suit because it needs deep clean and sanitation, and I’m not joking. Indecent.

New owners don't care. I was there around the holidays. Lights on but all the doors locked couldn't get gas. Just stopped again today and wouldn't read my card at the pump. Also tried full service and Noone came out

I tried getting gas here and the gas pumps were not working nor properly accepting my debit card. After leaving and going elsewhere for gas without paying a dime here, I was informed by my bank of an attempted payment of $126 coming from this gas station, thus resulting in me needing to get a new debit card. Edit: I just found this out about a month later about a type of data infiltration known as a card skimmer, which may have been what happened with the Sunoco transaction where a card skimmer was placed over the card insert for an unauthorized third party to retrieve credit card data and make transactions of their own. I'll bump my review up from 1 star to 3 stars, but I would strongly urge checking the pumps for card skimmers, if there ever were any

I pulled up there today get some gas and decided to take my business elsewhere and will be well into the future despite being a long term customer The pump acted weird and was no message and when I asked for help I was yelled at. I have auditory processing difficulties so sometimes I need things explained a little better so I can say for sure this gas station is not ADA compliant. The worst part is this obese unkempt worker was more focused on siting there and eating chips than anything else.
