Ridge Engine Machine & Repair Introduce

Ridge Engine Machine & Repair, located at 1236 Conant St, Maumee, OH 43537, USA, operates as a highly specialized "Auto Repair Stations" establishment, focusing primarily on intricate engine machining and repair services. This business stands out in the automotive repair landscape due to its deep expertise in engine components, offering services that go beyond general auto repair shops. With a history stretching back to 1945, initially as "Ridge Piston" and specializing in piston and connecting rod assemblies, it has evolved into a full-service machine shop and auto parts provider, now owned by David H Scott and Steven Eisenbrandt. David H Scott brings extensive experience, including 44 years in the automotive and machinist field and being an ASE Certified Master Tech for 22 years, specializing in Engine, Drivetrain, Transmission, and Drive Axles. You can reach them at (419) 893-3331 or via mobile at +1 419-893-3331.

The environment at Ridge Engine Machine & Repair is characteristic of a professional machine shop. While customer reviews don't detail a luxurious waiting area, the focus is clearly on the workshop itself, which would be equipped with precision machinery essential for engine work. The high praise from other mechanics and shop owners indicates a facility that is well-maintained and capable of handling highly technical jobs. The mention of "Cody" being able to expertly remove a deep scratch from a cylinder head suggests a hands-on, skilled environment where precision and attention to detail are paramount. Such shops prioritize the functionality and accuracy of their tools and equipment to perform specialized tasks like cylinder head resurfacing or engine block machining. The interaction with customers, as implied by the reviews, is direct and focused on the technical aspects of the repair, with a clear understanding of the value of time for professional clients.

Specialized Services and Goods for Sale

Ridge Engine Machine & Repair specializes in complex engine component work, distinguishing itself from general auto repair shops. As an "Auto Repair Station" with a strong emphasis on machining, their services are highly specific and critical for engine rebuilding and performance. Their expertise extends to various engine types, including automotive, marine, and agriculture.

Their core services include:

  • Cylinder Head Machining: This includes crucial processes like cylinder head resurfacing, which was highlighted by a customer who needed a deep scratch removed. This service ensures a perfectly flat mating surface, essential for proper engine sealing and compression.
  • Engine Block Machining: Services related to the engine block, which is the foundational part of an engine. This can involve boring, honing, and deck surfacing to restore specifications.
  • Crankshaft Services: Work on crankshafts, which convert reciprocating motion into rotational motion. This may include grinding, polishing, and crack detection to ensure smooth operation.
  • Crack Detection: Utilizing advanced methods to identify cracks in engine components that might not be visible to the naked eye, preventing potential failures.
  • Pistons and Rods Services: Addressing issues with pistons and connecting rods, critical components for engine power and efficiency.
  • Flywheel Resurfacing: Ensuring the flywheel has a flat surface for proper clutch engagement.
  • Complete Engine Rebuilds: While not explicitly detailed, their range of specialized services strongly implies their capability to perform comprehensive engine overhauls and rebuilds, piecing together precisely machined components.

While they are primarily a service provider, the history of Ridge Engine Machine & Repair indicates they also "sold automotive parts and accessories" in the past, and their current function as a machine shop means they inherently deal with and process various engine components. For engine rebuilds or specific machining jobs, they would work with new or existing engine parts, ensuring the components meet precise specifications after machining. They don't operate as a retail auto parts store in the traditional sense, but rather as a specialized facility that rebuilds and machines the very core components of an engine.

Distinctive Features and Industry Reputation

Ridge Engine Machine & Repair possesses several distinctive features that make it a notable establishment in the Maumee area, particularly within the specialized field of engine machining.

  • Highly Recommended by Industry Professionals: A significant feature is that the business comes "highly recommended with many others" by "mechanic friends and fellow shop owners." This indicates a strong reputation within the automotive industry itself, suggesting that other professionals trust Ridge Engine Machine & Repair for complex and critical engine work that they might not perform in-house. This third-party endorsement from knowledgeable sources is a powerful testament to their quality and expertise.
  • Specialized Expertise: Their primary focus on engine machining – cylinder heads, engine blocks, crankshafts, etc. – means they possess a deep, concentrated level of expertise that general repair shops typically do not. This specialization is crucial for precision work that can make or break an engine's performance and longevity. David H Scott's background as an ASE Certified Master Tech specializing in engines further reinforces this feature.
  • Quick Turnaround Time: Customers explicitly value their "much quicker" turnaround time. While other places might take "a week or two out for this job," Ridge Engine Machine & Repair gets jobs "in and out within a couple days." This efficiency is a critical advantage, especially for businesses or individuals where vehicle downtime translates directly to "time is money."
  • Problem-Solving Capability: The instance of Cody being able to "get that deep scratch out no problem" on a cylinder head highlights their technical skill and ability to salvage components that might otherwise be deemed irreparable by less specialized facilities.
  • Historical Foundation and Experience: The company's origins dating back to 1945 as "Ridge Piston" and its evolution into a full-service machine shop speaks to decades of accumulated knowledge and experience in the field of engine components. This long-standing history provides a depth of institutional knowledge that is invaluable.

However, it's important to acknowledge that one customer noted a perceived drawback regarding pricing for "simple jobs," stating they "cost like I am building a space shuttle." This suggests that while their specialized services and speed are highly valued, some customers might find their pricing structure to be at the higher end, especially for less complex tasks. The positive feedback consistently balances this by valuing the speed and quality delivered for critical, time-sensitive jobs.

Promotional Information and Accessibility

While Ridge Engine Machine & Repair may not run traditional consumer-facing promotions like discounted oil changes, their primary promotional strength lies in their reputation for specialized expertise and rapid service. The testimonial "Time is money so, even if they cost a little bit more, I happily went with them for the job" succinctly captures their value proposition. For individuals and businesses where vehicle downtime is costly, the faster turnaround time acts as a significant "promotion," outweighing potential cost differences. Their strong recommendation from other mechanics also serves as a powerful form of indirect promotion, as professionals often direct their clients to trusted specialists.

The company's "About Us" section on their website also mentions their current ownership by David H Scott and Steven Eisenbrandt, with David being an ASE Certified Master Tech. Highlighting the credentials and extensive experience of their leadership and staff (e.g., 44 years in the automotive and machinist field for David) is a strong promotional point for a specialized service like engine machining.

Ridge Engine Machine & Repair Customer Reviews

This is a before photo, I forgot to take an after photo. I have been in automotive for many years and when I asked all my mechanic friends and fellow shop owners on who to use for a cylinder head resurface job. This place came highly recommended with many others. Called multiple places and the pricing was pretty comparable, however the turn around time was much quicker. While others were a week or two out for this job, these guys got me in and out within a couple days. Time is money so, even if they cost a little bit more, I happily went with them for the job. The cylinder head did have a deep scratch in between 2 and 3 cylinders on the head. Cody was able to get that scratch out no problem and the cylinder head looked great when I picked it up.

Simple jobs cost like I am building a space shuttle. The only reason for 2 stars and not 1 is that they have priced themselves out of the market so they are able to get the job done in 1 day. Last time I made this mistake I told myself to not go back to them, well I forgot, hopefully my memory is better this time and my wallet will feel much better.

So I brought my engine here asked for a clean, hone the cylinders and mil the head, polish the crank and tear down of the short block . So he asked for 500 for initial deposit for tear down. He out sourced the crankshaft work that work was very good. I look at the block there was rust in the cylinders, the head wasn’t touched, cylinders were honed but the engine in total wasn’t taken apart all the way still had a bracket I wanted off and he didn’t clean any of it gasket maker on both sides of the block and head gasket material on top of the block. I had someone pick it up for me because I was out of time worst mistake I would have never payed 1100 dollars for nothing. The only good work was from hart machine shop. Fees are added at the end of your bill so get a print out of the totals mid way through cause fees are added out of the blue or just don’t go here

Recently took my 302 here to have a bore done. Engine was supposed to be hot tanked and cleaned as well. Was told a week it took 3. Charged me an insane $152 to put the rods on the new pistons and didn't even do it right. Took the cam bearing out without asking me then charged me $82 to put it back in and had to do it twice. Took my freeze plug out without telling me and just gave it back that way. The engine came back looking the exact same way I dropped it off. Definitely was never cleaned. Huge disappointment! Would never recommend them!

Had an IH tractor cylinder head freshened - milled, valve job etc. Got head back and valve spring retainers were mixed up some of the exhaust rotator retainers were on intake valves & vise versa. Had to swap them around myself at home. Overall tractor runs great no real complaints.
