Randy's Machine Shop Customer Reviews

Chris has been great to work with. Had Randy's go through some old Ford GT40P heads for me. Cleaned them up, resurfaced and valve job. Timeliness was great. Very down to earth and easy to deal with. Pricing was very upfront and appropriate for the work done.

Had a ball joint adapter pressed into the knuckle for my K swap project car. Knuckle needed slight machining as the adapter was oversized by manufacturer. Solid work. No complaints. Will be back.

TL;DR Chris has a tendency to be unprofessional and lacks accountability - and he wasted 3 months of my time before failing to solve anything. Chris repeatedly misled me about the status of my issue and was overall an unpleasant person to work with. I have been reluctant to write this review because it's not something I would normally do, but I felt a strong need to ensure people were not mislead by all of the 5 star reviews - as I was. They say you can tell a lot about a machine shop by how clean and organized it is, and I should have known from the moment I stepped into his shop that I would be in for a bad experience. Chris is incredibly friendly and charismatic IN PERSON, though I think that may just be a façade as once you're gone, so is the professionalism and kindness. I would also recommend taking all of the 5 star reviews with a grain of salt as most of them are from before Chris became the owner of this shop. In addition to that, its clear Chris attempts to discredit any negative reviews with snarky owner comments. Should such an owner comment be posted I will be sure to share additional evidence of my experience for credibility's sake. Despite the struggles, I was always kind and courteous in my correspondence. Anywho! I took my Cylinder Head to Chris in early February and described my issues and concerns about needing a valve job as there was a lot of compression leakage. At drop off, Chris quoted me 5-10 days before it would be ready for pick up. On the 11th day, I contacted Chris for an update and never heard back. I proceeded to be ghosted by him for the next 3 weeks before I ultimately drove to the shop to get an update in person. As mentioned, Chris is incredibly charismatic in person and I was more or less charmed at the time and let things lie as they were. After about another month, Chris finally contacted me and said my head was ready for pickup. At pickup Chris noted that he did not perform a valve job as all valves were holding vacuum properly. I was skeptical of this, but he doubly assured me they were fine. Silly me reinstalled my head and lo-and-behold, I was still leaking 90%+ out of my exhaust valves. I got ahold of Chris and he seemed very understanding and took my head back in. I dropped it off early Monday morning and he told me he would look at it ASAP and call me before end of business that day. Monday came and went and I had heard nothing by mid day Tuesday. I called and emailed once every 2-4 days and was once again getting the silent treatment (2 weeks maybe?). This is however where Chris became surprisingly unprofessional and rude in his emails and basically blew me off after that. About another whole month or so (we are at the end of May) he confirmed my head was ready for pickup. He again noted there were no vacuum issues and despite my frustrations, his charisma won out again. I learned though, and I tested the vacuum at home myself before reinstalling the head. No surprise, it was still leaking 90%+. There were 0 changes. A little over 3 months of my time wasted. I later took my head to another machine shop in town and within a month they had my head spick and span, they confirmed and fixed the vacuum leak and my car ran like a gem afterwards. At no point did Chris ever admit any faults nor apologize for any of his behavior, even after I confirmed for him that another shop resolved my issue. I greatly regret not taking my head to that second shop, first.

I've had some time to consider leaving a review and have decided to share my experience. These guys insisted I didn't need an align hone or bore on a 50 year old big block. Strange, but I took their word for it. Sure enough, upon assembly the crank won't even turn! Locked up tight. So the crank is now ground down another .010 by another shop and holes aligned. Also, valve stems all different heights on heads with non-adjustable rockers. Re-done correctly by another shop. Also, I have no idea who they outsourced the balancing of my crankshaft to, so I guess I'm crossing my fingers on that one! The biggest dissappointment... absolutely nothing was documented from the process except for my bill (which wasn't small).

I use Randy's for all my machining exclusively! I've used them for years. Absolutely fantastic quality! Chris - the owner-believes in quality versus quantity, just as I do. Everything I've gotten back has been perfect. Might take some time, if you want it tomorrow forget it. But if you want it right then this is the place!
