Located at 4138-52 Market St in Philadelphia, PA, Midas is an establishment operating within the Auto Repair Stations category, offering a variety of automotive services and potentially the sale of some auto parts. While traditionally known as an auto repair and service chain, this specific Midas location's offerings and environment can be better understood through the lens of recent customer experiences.

Based on the available reviews, the customer service at this Midas location appears to be a significant aspect of their operation. One customer shared an "excellent experience," specifically highlighting the professionalism, friendliness, and helpfulness of staff members Marquita (aka Keke) and Milton. This positive feedback emphasizes Keke's "warm and welcoming attitude" and her ability to ensure the customer understood the service process. Milton's expertise and attention to detail were also praised, instilling confidence in the quality of the work performed. This positive account suggests a customer-centric approach by some members of the team, contributing to a stress-free and efficient visit for at least one customer.

However, another customer's experience presents a contrasting perspective. While acknowledging the polite and smiling demeanor of the staff as a "bright spot," this reviewer detailed several significant concerns that led to a one-star rating and a decision not to return. These concerns revolve around excessive wait times, a perceived lack of transparency in diagnostic explanations, and potentially higher costs for basic services.

The issue of wait time was a major point of contention for the dissatisfied customer. Arriving around 11 a.m. for a state inspection, they were informed that the service would not be completed until 1:30 p.m., a two-and-a-half-hour wait. The front desk reportedly stated that this was "standard policy" at this Midas location. The customer, having had previous state inspections in Pennsylvania with significantly shorter wait times, found this policy to be inefficient and inconvenient.

Furthermore, the transparency regarding the safety test failure was questioned. The initial reason given for the failure was "scratches" on the front rotors, which the customer, upon personal inspection, found to be smooth with no obvious flaws. The explanation then shifted to "darkened color" and "minor rust on the edges," conditions the customer believed were typical for a car driven infrequently and did not impact safety. Despite this, the shop insisted on rotor replacement, providing a quote of $963.69, later discounted to around $890. The recommendation to also replace the front brake pads simply because the rotors were being replaced was perceived as potential upselling rather than addressing genuine safety concerns.

The cost of services also raised concerns. The customer noted being charged over $90 for an emission test alone (due to the safety test failure), which they felt was higher than typical rates for a complete state inspection at other shops. This led to a perception of potentially excessive pricing for basic services at this location.

The resolution for the dissatisfied customer involved seeking a second opinion at another repair shop nearby, where their vehicle successfully passed the safety inspection without any of the issues identified by Midas. This outcome further solidified their negative experience and their decision not to return to this Midas location, citing a lack of honesty and unacceptable wait times as key factors. The reviewer also mentioned having multiple vehicles requiring regular maintenance and emphasized that integrity is a crucial factor in their choice of service providers.

Considering these contrasting reviews, it is challenging to provide a definitive description of the environment, services, and features of this Midas location. While some staff members are commended for their excellent customer service and helpfulness, other aspects of the operation, such as wait times, diagnostic transparency, and pricing, appear to be areas of concern for some customers. The services offered likely include state inspections (emission and safety), brake service (including rotor and pad replacement), and potentially other standard automotive maintenance like oil changes, tire services, and more, typical of a Midas franchise. However, the quality and pricing of these services seem to vary based on individual customer experiences.

Currently, there is no specific promotional information available in the provided data. Customers interested in learning about any ongoing promotions or discounts at this Midas location would need to contact them directly. Given the mixed reviews, it would be prudent for potential customers to inquire about wait times for specific services and to seek clear explanations for any recommended repairs, potentially even seeking a second opinion if significant concerns arise.

In conclusion, this Midas location on Market Street in Philadelphia offers a range of auto repair services, including state inspections and brake work. While some customers have reported positive experiences with friendly and helpful staff, others have raised concerns regarding long wait times, transparency in diagnoses, and potentially higher service costs. Local users considering this Midas for their auto repair needs should be aware of these differing perspectives and may want to gather more information or seek clarification on service procedures and pricing before committing to services.

Vehicle Information: 2019 Toyota 4Runner Mileage: Approximately 31,500 miles Date of Visit: January 14, 2025 Service Requested: State Inspection Results: • Emission Test: Passed • Safety Test: Failed (due to alleged issues with front rotors) ****************************************** Rating: 1 Star While the staff were friendly and professional, my overall experience was extremely disappointing. Here are the reasons for my rating: Pros: • The staff were polite and greeted customers with smiles. Their service attitude was the one bright spot in an otherwise frustrating visit. Cons: 1. Excessive Wait Time I arrived around 11 a.m. and provided my insurance and vehicle registration. I was informed that the state inspection would not be completed until 1:30 p.m.—a two-and-a-half-hour wait. The front desk explained that this was standard policy at this Midas location. However, since 2021, I have had state inspections performed in Pennsylvania and have never encountered such a long delay. This policy made the experience inefficient and inconvenient. 2. Lack of Transparency The safety test failure was attributed to “scratches” on the front rotors, which they claimed required replacement. When shown the rotors, I personally inspected them and found the surface to be smooth and similar to the rear rotors, with no obvious flaws. After pointing this out, the explanation shifted to “darkened color” and “minor rust on the edges.” These issues are typical for a car driven infrequently (about 4,000 miles in the past two years) and do not impact safety. Despite this, they insisted the rotors needed to be replaced and quoted $963.69 for the job, later offering a “discount” to around $890. Additionally, they recommended replacing the front brake pads simply because they were replacing the rotors. This approach seemed more like upselling than addressing genuine safety concerns. 3. Higher Costs for Basic Services If I hadn’t visited this Midas location, I wouldn’t have been charged over $90 just for an emission test (since the safety test failed). Frankly, this fee seemed higher than what other shops typically charge for a state inspection. While inflation and tax increases may play a role, the pricing here felt excessive. ********************************************* Resolution: Fortunately, I have some basic knowledge of car maintenance, and I was confident that the recommended repairs were unnecessary. Later that same day, I visited another repair shop nearby. At approximately 2:20 p.m., my vehicle successfully passed the safety inspection without any issues. ******************************************** Conclusion: I do not plan to return to this Midas location. While their customer service was good, the lack of honesty regarding my vehicle’s condition and the excessive wait times make it impossible for me to trust them again. My household has four vehicles that require regular maintenance, but integrity is a key factor in choosing a service provider, and this experience fell far short of that standard. Additionally, their inspection wait time policy is unacceptable. Being told explicitly by the front desk that I would need to wait over two hours for a state inspection was another reason I will not return. This review reflects my personal experience and opinions, shared to help other drivers make informed decisions when choosing an auto repair shop.
