Jack's University Auto Services Introduce
Jack's University Auto Services, located at 2718 E University Ave, Des Moines, IA 50317, USA, presents itself as an independent auto repair station offering a range of services for local users. The facility can be reached at (515) 266-6731 or +1 515-266-6731 for inquiries and appointments. As an "Auto Repair Stations" platform category, Jack's University Auto Services is positioned to provide various vehicle maintenance and repair solutions to the Des Moines community.
Based on customer feedback, the environment at Jack's University Auto Services, like many independent auto shops, appears to be a functional space dedicated to vehicle repair. While specific details about waiting areas or amenities are not available, the focus seems to be on the repair bays and the hands-on work performed by mechanics. The direct interactions described by customers suggest a business where communication with the owner and staff is key to the service experience.
The services offered at Jack's University Auto Services, according to customer accounts, encompass general vehicle maintenance and repairs. Specific services mentioned include coolant system flushes and replacements, thermostat replacement, housing replacement, spark plug replacement, coil replacement, and diagnostics. Customers seeking second opinions on issues like struts and brake replacements have also engaged with their services. The business appears to handle a variety of common automotive problems, aiming to provide solutions for a broad spectrum of vehicle needs.
Regarding features, Jack's University Auto Services operates as a local, independent repair shop. This often implies a direct relationship with the owner and a more personalized approach to customer service, which can be both a strength and a challenge. One customer highlighted the potential for cost savings compared to larger, "big-name" places, indicating that the shop may offer competitive pricing. The ability to perform diagnostic tests and offer honest assessments of vehicle issues are also implied features of their service. However, it's important for potential customers to note that working on a vehicle without explicit consent has been raised as a significant concern by one customer, suggesting a need for clear communication and authorization before any work is performed.
Promotional information, while not explicitly detailed by the available reviews, can be inferred from the nature of the business and customer experiences. The idea of offering "honest opinions" and saving customers money on repairs, as described by one positive review, serves as a form of promotion. The emphasis on being "down-to-earth" and not "scaring" customers into sales or services suggests a desire to build trust and long-term relationships within the local community. However, contradictory experiences from other customers highlight the importance of exercising due diligence and confirming all aspects of the repair process and associated costs.
It's crucial to present an objective view based on the provided customer reviews, which offer contrasting perspectives on Jack's University Auto Services. One customer detailed a series of highly negative experiences, starting with an unauthorized thermostat and housing replacement instead of the requested coolant flush, leading to a check engine light issue. This customer reported subsequent misfires, the car powering down, and multiple returns to the shop, ultimately resulting in significant expenses ($738) and the car no longer starting. The customer alleged that issues were created by the shop and then charged for, describing the business as "crooks" and "scammers." Concerns were also raised about the owner's attitude and working on the car without consent. Conversely, another customer provided a positive account, praising the shop for an honest opinion on struts and brakes, saving them money compared to another quote, and appreciating the educational and "down-to-earth" approach of the staff. This customer's experience suggests a capacity for fair pricing and transparent communication.
In summary, Jack's University Auto Services presents itself as a local auto repair option in Des Moines. Their services cover a range of common vehicle issues, and some customers have found their pricing to be competitive and their advice honest. However, prospective customers should be aware of the varied experiences reported, particularly concerning unauthorized repairs and the resolution of persistent issues. As with any auto repair service, clear communication, detailed estimates, and documented consent for all work are advisable to ensure a satisfactory experience.

Jack's University Auto Services Customer Reviews
Where do I even begin with this nightmare! Dealing with the owner and staff at Jack’s has been a fiasco to say the least. I wish I could give them zero stars because that’s what they deserve! I took my 2017 Jeep Grand Cherokee into their establishment on 1/31/2024 simply wanting my radiation system flushed out and new coolant to be put into my car, which should have been no more than $200.00. Issue #1 began when instead of them draining my coolant and replacing it they switched the thermostat in my vehicle and replaced the housing which cost $265.00, never getting my consent to do so, they called once the work was finished with the price and a time my car could be picked up. When I got my car my check engine light was off, but by the the following day the light came back on and said that my engine temperature was to low and wasn’t heating up properly. When I checked my coolant it hadn’t been changed. It was after hours and their facility was closed for the night. So, I reached out to the owner (Jack) first thing the next morning on 2/1/2024, he said that it was a misunderstanding and if I still wanted to get my coolant drained he would discount the price and charge me $100.00, I was reluctant but went through with letting them do the work, and dropped my car back off to them on 2/2/2024 to get the coolant flushed. The check engine light was off and the car seemed to be working properly when I picked it back up the same day. On 2/3/2024 I drove my car on I-235 to go to dinner with friends and while on the interstate my check engine light came back on and my car starting shaking and misfiring which it had NEVER DONE prior to them changing the coolant in my car, later that same night my car powered down and shut off while I was trying to park at a bar. It was the weekend and their facility was closed until Monday, so I went to O’reily’s and got a diagnostics test done on 2/4/2024 which showed that my car had multiple misfires and suggested that the possible reason was a coil that needed to be replaced, and possible censors. First thing Monday morning on 2/5/2024 I took my car into them and explained what it was doing, the owner (Jack) had a disgusting attitude and said that he wasn’t going to “work for free”, to fix the issue. Even though my car had never misfired prior to being worked on by his shop. I told him that all I wanted to be done was a diagnostics test to see if his machine matched up with what the O’reily’s diagnostics stated, so that we could pinpoint the exact issue and he agreed. On 2/6/2024 the owner called back and stated that my they changed a coil in my car and put new spark plugs in and my car was ready to be picked up and stated that the cost for parts and labor came to a total of $360.00. Again, working on my car without my approval or consent. At that point I was extremely frustrated, but I paid them because I didn’t want to risk them trying to keep my car with them for another second, if I disagreed with them. So we paid them and took my car, again when my car was picked up and the check engine light was off, but on 2/7/2024 which was yesterday morning, I drove my car to school at 8:30am, my check engine light came back on and my car started misfiring again. I called the owner first when they opened at 9am and told him what my car was doing and explained to him that I’ve had too many issues with his facility and asked if the parts they replaced on my car were new or after market parts, and asked for a copy of the receipts for all parts said to have been purchased for my car. The owner (Jack) offered to have me bring my car in a 4th time and I declined, he then screamed into the phone and stated that they are a legit business and that he had receipts for the purchases and then proceeded to hang up on me, I haven’t called him back and I don’t plan too.I paid these people $738 in total and of of last night 2/7/2024 my car is no longer starting. THEY WILL CREATE PROBLEMS ON YOUR CAR AND THEN CHARGE YOU TO FIX THEM. THEY ARE ABSOLUTE CROOKS, AND THEY FLAT-OUT SCAMMED. ME, SO BEWARE!!!!!

Came to get second opinion on struts, and also potential break replacement. They gave me honest opinion on the struts, which I did ask them to replace, and they said breaks were fine, just the rotor(s) needed cleaning. They saved me hundreds from a quote I received at another big-name place. The car handles great, I can tell the difference, and no more grinding breaks sound! Got to sit with these two brothers a bit. I appreciated their educating me on what I needed to know, some chitchat, and just their being down-to-earth, not scaring me into a sale/service.

Beware! Especially females or the elderly. It's true my car ran good again; initially I went just for diagnostics and then gave approval on the problem I was told about, but the final result was over 3 times the cost discussed on the phone. Further unapproved maintenance was done without consent or discussion and when I asked why, I was given the 'canned answer' of automotive thieves ~~~If you don't want those extra parts we can remove them. Bad business and untrustworthy. What's sad is that they did an excellent job but without communication.

We broke down traveling through and stopped in for repairs. Even as busy as they were they worked me in and charged me a more than fair price. True blessing to run into honest people. Highly recommend Jacks!!!

I called the shop and gave my credit card information on Nov 4th to help my brother fix his car. I gave the details to someone working at the shop. I live in Chicago. I used my card again on Nov 12th and found out that someone in Iowa made fraudulent charges on my card. The only place in Iowa who had my info was this shop. It was a new card. My brother did not have the info. There is an investigation going forward.
