Foreign Auto & Supply Introduce
For owners of foreign automobiles, particularly enthusiasts of the Volkswagen Vanagon, finding a specialized parts supplier and service provider can be a distinct challenge. Foreign Auto & Supply, located at 33 Henry Creek Way, Harpswell, ME 04079, USA, positions itself as a niche provider within the "Auto Repair Stations" category, offering services and goods tailored to these specific vehicle types. However, a comprehensive look at customer feedback reveals a stark contrast in experiences, providing crucial insights for prospective patrons.
Based on the customer reviews, the environment at Foreign Auto & Supply elicits strong, conflicting reactions. While one positive review praises "consistent communication" and "detail-oriented diagnostics," the overwhelming sentiment from other customers suggests a highly unrefined and potentially hostile atmosphere. Phrases like "unrefined and have not heard the term 'customer centric'," "really rude and ego-centric people," and "they will just curse you" paint a picture of a business environment severely lacking in professionalism and basic respect for customers. The reference to it being a "2 guys 'shop'" implies a smaller operation, which can sometimes lead to more personalized service, but in this case, it appears to contribute to a less formal, and at times, abrasive interaction style. The negative experiences suggest an atmosphere where customer grievances are met with defensiveness and outright rudeness rather than problem-solving. This kind of environment can make customers feel unwelcome and disrespected, creating a highly unpleasant experience despite any technical expertise that might be present.
As an "Auto Repair Station" with "Foreign Auto & Supply" in its name, this business clearly specializes in non-domestic vehicles, with a particular emphasis, based on reviews, on Volkswagen Vanagons. Their services and goods include:
- Specialized Parts Supply: They sell specific kits and parts for foreign vehicles, such as the "kit for installing a muffler onto the vanagon" mentioned by a customer. This indicates a focus on sourcing and providing hard-to-find or specialized components for particular foreign models.
- Vehicle Diagnostics and Repairs: The positive review highlights "detail-oriented diagnostics and repairs," suggesting they possess the knowledge and tools to accurately assess and fix issues in foreign vehicles, enabling vans to run and drive "better than ever."
- Technical Knowledge and Expertise: The phrase "so grateful for your knowledge and expertise" from a satisfied customer points to a deep understanding of the intricacies of foreign automobiles, which is essential for proper diagnosis and repair of specialized vehicles like the Vanagon.
- Potential for "Packages": One review mentions "expensive $20,000 packages," which could imply comprehensive service or restoration packages for specialized vehicles, suggesting they undertake extensive projects.
The goods for sale would include a variety of specialized automotive parts, kits, and components for foreign car brands, likely focusing on specific systems or models where they have expertise. This is not a general auto parts store for all makes and models but rather a niche supplier. The conflicting reviews, however, raise significant questions about the accuracy of product representations and the willingness to take responsibility for faulty or misadvertised goods.
Foreign Auto & Supply exhibits a clear specialization and potential expertise, but also significant shortcomings in customer relations:
- Niche Specialization: Their focus on foreign autos, particularly Vanagons, is a distinct strength. This specialization can be invaluable for owners of these vehicles who struggle to find competent service and parts elsewhere.
- Technical Knowledge: When service is positive, it's attributed to "knowledge and expertise," suggesting competent mechanics for complex foreign vehicle systems.
- Problem-Solving Capability: The van running "better than ever" indicates effective repair and diagnostic skills.
However, the negative reviews highlight critical weaknesses:
- Horrible Customer Service: This is the most consistent and severe criticism. Reviews repeatedly mention "rude," "ego-centric," "unrefined" staff who "curse you" and "don't care for the customer experience at all." This is a fundamental flaw in business operation.
- Lack of Accountability and Responsibility: Customers report that the shop does not take responsibility for products that "do not work as advertised" or for their own mistakes.
- Refusal of Returns and Lack of Support: The business allegedly "will not stand to their promises" and "even refuse to help you in anyway" after a sale. The stated difficulty with returns, including requiring customers to pay return shipping for misrepresented products, is a major red flag.
- Misrepresentation of Products: One customer states a kit was "assured" to work for a diesel Vanagon but did not, leading to extensive workaround hours. This suggests a potential issue with product knowledge or deliberate misrepresentation.
- Poor Communication: The complaint "Don't answer or return calls either" indicates a lack of basic professional communication, adding to customer frustration.
- Overpricing: A customer explicitly calls a kit "super overpriced at over $200 for just several brackets."
- Ethical Concerns: The suggestion to "be really reported to the Automotive Repair Bureau for screwing people" indicates perceived unethical business practices.
Foreign Auto & Supply's contact information includes a phone number (207) 833-0009 and a mobile number +1 207-833-0009, with their physical address at 33 Henry Creek Way, Harpswell, ME 04079, USA. For local users in Harpswell and surrounding areas, particularly those with foreign vehicles, especially Vanagons, Foreign Auto & Supply might appear as a specialized option. However, prospective customers must weigh the specialized expertise against the severe and consistent complaints regarding customer service, product accuracy, and returns. It is advisable to proceed with extreme caution. Given the feedback, it would be prudent to:
- Confirm product compatibility thoroughly before purchase, perhaps requesting written confirmation.
- Clarify return policies and potential associated costs in advance.
- Consider the potential for difficult customer interactions if issues arise.
While the business might offer highly specific parts and service for a niche market, the documented customer experiences suggest that customers might risk encountering a lack of professionalism and support, especially if a product does not meet expectations or is misrepresented. This business's reputation, based on these reviews, is significantly hampered by its alleged approach to customer relations and accountability.

If this 2 guys "shop" sells you something and it does not work as advertised, don't expect them to take responsibility or do anything to fix it. Don't expect them to return it either, it will be all on you. They will just curse you. As the other people say in their reviews they are unrefined and have not heard the term "customer centric". God forbid you buy one of their expensive $20,000 packages from them and be captive to their mercy! Not only they will not stand to their promises but they will even refuse to help you in anyway and if you are dependent on them - you are out of luck! Really rude and ego-centric people in this shop! Don't care for the customer experience at all. Don't answer or return calls either. Horrible customer service. I purchased from them a kit for installing a muffler onto the vanagon. It was super overpriced at over $200 for just several brackets. They assured me on the phone it would work for the diesel vanagon. Then when I got it it turned out it did not work! I had to do many hours of adjustments and work arounds to make it work. They also would not accept return the product and ask me to pay $50 shipping out of my pocket to return. Basically they misrepresented the product and did not take any responsibility after that. They were completely rude and unapologetic. They did not even paint or primer the two brackets which they charged so much money for. Avoid doing business with them at all costs. There are other choices out there where you will not be a prisoner of two rude fellas. They should be really reported to the Automotive Repair Bureau for screwing people and not providing them with the follow on services and products needed after they have sold you on their stuff.

FAS has a huge reputation as the best, slow...but worth the wait. I waited a year then delivered my vanagon for an engine replacement. A huge investment so wanted the "best." They had my vehicle for months knowing I was leaving for a cross country trip late August. I got my bus back a month or so before my trip only to discover it made a loud vibration/sound when travelling between 55 - 65mph and brakes that pulsated. I brought it back, a 3 1/2 hour trip one way, for an assessment. They thought it was the transmission (a transmission rebuild was part of the work they did for me) so they requested the third party who did the transmission work to send a "new" gear box. Again I waited. The gear box was installed the day before I left on my cross country trip (7 hours of driving when I should have been packing!) They charged me an additional $2000 for the gear box and it didnt fix the problem! The bus broke down in Phoenix due to a rotted power steering hose. Why didnt FAS replace this hose??? The AZ mechanic (a lifelong VW bus mechanic) quickly assessed the root of the noise/vibration being do to there only being two motor mounts instead of the tradition three mounts used in the VW Jetta. He informed me there was no solution to the problem:( On the trip I calculated my mpg and found it to range between 15-17 mpg. FAS stated it should be in the low to mid 20s, but offered no reason for my poor mpg, just stated I could drive back to Maine and they would look at it. A year previous, when discussing the engine replacement, Chris at FAS said they would hold a spot in the Fall/winter 2019/2020 schedule to do a full body repair/rubber/paint. When I contacted him just recently I was told they were running behind 1 to 2 years! I hope my experience is not the norm. Normally I dont post negative experiences, but in case this is not an isolated experience, I felt other van owners should know.

We had communication issues, that led to a few unpleasant emails. I've heard nothing but good things about them, I've even heard they are the best at what they do. My VW dreams are dead, they were my last hope. I wanted a sticker, and ended up with sticker shock. Assessment was not what I was expecting, I'm sure our interaction was not normal.
