City Scrap & Salvage Introduce

For individuals and businesses in Akron, Ohio, looking to recycle scrap metal, dispose of old vehicles, or find cost-effective used auto parts, City Scrap & Salvage is a well-established and essential resource within the Auto Repair Stations category. While not a traditional "repair station" in the sense of performing mechanical work, salvage yards like City Scrap & Salvage are integral to the automotive ecosystem, providing a sustainable source of parts and raw materials. Founded in 1945, this family-owned business has over 70 years of experience, serving as a pillar in the local recycling industry.

The Environment at City Scrap & Salvage

The environment at City Scrap & Salvage, typical of a large-scale scrap and salvage yard, is one of industrial activity and organized processing. It’s designed for the efficient handling, sorting, and processing of various metals and vehicles. While the primary focus is on operations, the company emphasizes a professional and environmentally conscious approach. Their website highlights an "updated facility" with a commitment to "environmentally friendly auto & scrap metal recycling." This suggests efforts to maintain a clean and safe working environment, adhering to regulations for material handling and storage, especially concerning fluids and hazardous materials from dismantled vehicles, as outlined by environmental protection standards for salvage yards. For customers, the experience would involve designated drop-off points for scrap metal and vehicles, and potentially a separate area for purchasing used parts. The staff aims for "superior customer service and friendly atmosphere," indicating a focus on making the process easy and efficient for both large corporations and individual residential neighbors.

Comprehensive Services and Goods for Sale

City Scrap & Salvage offers a diverse range of services and goods, extending beyond simple auto parts sales. Their core business revolves around metal recycling and vehicle processing:

  • Scrap Metal Buying and Recycling: They purchase and process a wide variety of ferrous and non-ferrous metals. This includes common items like aluminum (including beverage cans and siding), brass, copper, cast iron, steel screws, sheet iron, and stainless steel. This service allows individuals and businesses to monetize their metal waste, contributing to a circular economy.
  • Vehicle and Auto Parts Recycling: A significant part of their operation involves buying and recycling scrap cars, trucks, and their individual parts. This makes them a crucial point for end-of-life vehicles. They dismantle vehicles to recover valuable components and materials.
  • Used Auto Parts Sales: While not explicitly detailed as a primary service on their main "About Us" page, as a salvage yard, City Scrap & Salvage inherently offers a supply of used, recycled OEM auto parts. Customers can often find quality parts at a fraction of the cost of new ones, making it an economical option for vehicle repairs. The company states they "buy and recycle it all" from automobiles and auto parts, suggesting a robust inventory or access to salvaged components.
  • Electronics Scrap Recycling: In addition to traditional metals and vehicles, they also accept and recycle electronics scrap, such as computer towers, further diversifying their recycling capabilities.
  • Industrial Container Service: For larger industrial clients, they provide dumpster pick-ups and drop-offs for scrap metal, offering a convenient solution for businesses generating significant metal waste.
Features That Set Them Apart

City Scrap & Salvage possesses several distinguishing features that make them a unique and valuable entity in the Akron area:

  • The Area's Only Automotive Shredder: This is a major differentiating factor. Operating with two powerful 1,500 horsepower Waukesha natural gas engines, this "Thunder Pumpkins" shredder allows them to efficiently process entire vehicles and large volumes of scrap metal, demonstrating a high level of industrial capability and commitment to large-scale recycling.
  • Long-Standing Family Ownership and Experience: With over 70 years in business and three generations of family involvement, City Scrap & Salvage has built deep roots and trust within the community. This longevity speaks to their reliability and consistent service.
  • Comprehensive Metal Recycling: They accept a broad spectrum of metal types, from small household items to industrial machinery, positioning them as a one-stop solution for diverse recycling needs.
  • Environmental Commitment: The company explicitly states its dedication to "protecting our environment" and "preserving our great planet for generations to come." Their recycling efforts significantly contribute to landfill reduction and resource sustainability.
  • Customer-Centric Approach: Despite being an industrial operation, they emphasize "superior customer service" and a "friendly atmosphere," aiming to make the process easy and profitable for everyone, from large corporations to individual residents. They focus on quick and efficient transactions.
  • Acceptance of All Types of Scrap Metal: Their unique value proposition lies in their ability to accept all types of scrap metal, including junk vehicles and auto parts, regardless of age or condition, providing a reliable outlet for difficult-to-dispose-of items.
Promotional Information

While City Scrap & Salvage operates in a business-to-business and business-to-consumer hybrid model, their promotional activities focus on their core strengths and community integration:

  • Strong Local Reputation and Word-of-Mouth: Their decades of service have built a solid reputation, leading to significant word-of-mouth referrals within the Akron community.
  • Online Presence: Their official website serves as a primary promotional tool, detailing accepted materials, hours of operation, contact information, and highlighting their unique features like the automotive shredder. This provides essential information for potential customers.
  • Community Engagement: As a long-standing local business, they are inherently part of the community fabric, which implicitly promotes their services to residents and businesses.
  • Focus on Environmental Benefits: Promoting their role in environmental protection, landfill reduction, and resource sustainability serves as a powerful message, appealing to environmentally conscious individuals and companies.
  • Direct Communication for Pricing: For current scrap metal prices, customers are encouraged to contact them directly, implying that prices are competitive and updated regularly. This direct engagement allows them to offer personalized service.
  • Social Media Presence (Implied): While not explicitly stated as a major driver, many modern businesses, even in industrial sectors, leverage social media to showcase their operations, accepted materials, and community involvement. Their job postings suggest they may utilize social media for marketing and customer engagement.
  • Efficient and Fair Transactions: The promise of making recycling "easy, profitable, and environmentally friendly" for everyone, combined with "state-of-the-art technology such as electronic platform scales to ensure accurate assessments and fair prices," acts as a promotional message that emphasizes customer benefit.

In essence, City Scrap & Salvage is more than just a place to discard old metal; it's a vital part of Akron's recycling infrastructure, offering essential services and contributing to environmental sustainability through its specialized auto parts and metal recycling operations.

I've been there 2 times alone and I am still deciding whether the 2 boys in the garage weighing area think I'm a not so informed female and taking advantage of me or if they plain just don't know there metals, the first time I took a bucket of old heavy thick screws and lag bolts a huge full kitty litter bucket and a old old heavy brass lamp that was hard to lift and carry and they paid me as 12 lbs of aluminum.... 12 lbs of aluminum would have a large volume of space and not fit in my car.uuummmm Today I scrapped 2 old huge heavy tvs that I took apart all night and had a bag of copper from them , on my scale was a bit over 5lbs the bigger pieces I stripped from a black taped up like cord that had the long thick copper inside ,,so after I stripped all the wrapping it should have been type 2 clean copper ,they wrote it up as aluminum ,told me people get aluminum and copper confused alot and I brought up about my brass lamp from previous visit he told me the same thats one heavy huge 12 lb aluminum table lamp wouldn't you say, so today got paid 7 lbs of aluminum,, I won't back a company that takes advantage of females or have employees that don't know there shit enough to be qualified for this job of peoples hard work cleaning up there scrap and getting paid incorrectly. Still not sure of which scenario is the truth here.

Besides they have the best prices, bigger machinery, so you can bring bigger scrap, they're a pillar of our community. I'm 44, I remember going there with my neighbor, when I was young. The staff is super polite, which in my experience, the 3 other scraps yards that I've been to and know of, yeah there's no comparison. Friendly knowledgeable, and they get you in and out.
