In Connecticut, as the push for more sustainable and environmentally friendly transportation solutions continues, dedicated fueling stations catering to alternative fuels are becoming increasingly vital. For fleet operators, commercial vehicles, and even some private users, the Clean Energy Fuels station at 33 Maxim Rd in Hartford, CT, represents a key piece of this evolving infrastructure. Unlike traditional gasoline or diesel stations, this facility specializes in providing natural gas, specifically Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) and potentially Renewable Natural Gas (RNG), offering a cleaner-burning alternative for a range of vehicles. This article will provide a comprehensive look at what this Clean Energy Fuels location offers to the Hartford community and beyond.
Clean Energy Fuels is a prominent name in the alternative fuel industry, known for building and operating an extensive network of natural gas fueling stations across North America. Their mission is to provide accessible, affordable, and cleaner fuel options, primarily for the transportation sector. The Hartford location on Maxim Road is part of this larger network, designed to support the growing number of vehicles transitioning away from conventional fossil fuels. For businesses and municipalities in Connecticut looking to reduce their carbon footprint and operating costs, understanding the services and features of this station is crucial for adopting sustainable transportation practices.
The Clean Energy Fuels station is conveniently located at 33 Maxim Rd, Hartford, CT 06114, USA. This address places it within a commercial and industrial area of Hartford, making it particularly accessible for the types of vehicles it serves, such as heavy-duty trucks, buses, and fleet vehicles. A significant advantage of its location is its easy access to I-91. As noted by customers, it offers "easy on and off" access to this major interstate highway, which is a critical transportation corridor in Connecticut. This connectivity to I-91 makes it a strategic fueling point for long-haul trucks, regional delivery fleets, and public transit vehicles that operate across the state and beyond.
Maxim Road itself is generally designed to accommodate larger vehicles, providing ample room for tractor-trailers to maneuver and fuel. This consideration in design is vital for commercial operations, ensuring that even the largest vehicles can safely and efficiently use the facility. For fleet managers and drivers in the Greater Hartford area, the station's accessibility minimizes downtime and streamlines fueling logistics, contributing to more efficient operations for businesses committed to using natural gas fuels.
The Clean Energy Fuels station at 33 Maxim Rd in Hartford primarily focuses on providing natural gas fuels for vehicles. As a specialist in this sector, their services are tailored to the needs of Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) and potentially Renewable Natural Gas (RNG) users:
Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) Fueling: This is the core service. The station provides CNG, which is natural gas stored at high pressure, suitable for a wide range of vehicles from light-duty to heavy-duty trucks and buses. CNG offers a cleaner-burning alternative to gasoline and diesel, producing fewer emissions.
Renewable Natural Gas (RNG) Availability: Clean Energy Fuels is a leading provider of RNG, which is chemically identical to conventional natural gas but is derived from biogenic methane sources like landfills and dairy farms. While not explicitly stated for this exact location, Clean Energy's broader commitment suggests that their stations, including potentially this one, can dispense RNG. RNG significantly reduces greenhouse gas emissions, often achieving negative carbon intensity, making it an even more environmentally friendly option.
Fleet Fueling Solutions: Clean Energy Fuels typically caters to commercial and municipal fleets. This involves providing reliable fueling infrastructure that can handle multiple large vehicles, often operating 24/7 to meet the demands of continuous operations like waste collection or public transit.
Public Access (for CNG vehicles): While often utilized by dedicated fleets, stations like this one on Maxim Road are typically open to any vehicle capable of running on CNG, providing public access for qualified users.
24/7 Operation: As a station catering to commercial fleets, it is highly probable that this Clean Energy Fuels location operates 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, ensuring that essential services like refuse collection and public transportation can fuel up at any time.
Customer Support: Clean Energy Fuels offers customer support for fueling issues and station incidents, typically via a dedicated hotline, which provides assistance to users encountering problems at the pumps.
The Clean Energy Fuels station on Maxim Road in Hartford has several distinct features and highlights that define its operation and customer experience:
Dedicated Natural Gas Fueling: Its primary highlight is its specialization in natural gas fuels (CNG/RNG). This focus means it's equipped with the specific infrastructure required for these vehicles, offering a vital resource for fleets and individuals committed to alternative fuels in Connecticut.
Ample Space for Large Vehicles: A significant advantage, particularly for its target commercial clientele, is the "plenty of room for tractor trailers." This design consideration ensures that large vehicles can easily access, navigate, and fuel at the pumps without congestion or difficulty, which is critical for efficient fleet operations.
Strategic Interstate Access: The "easy on and off I-91" accessibility is a major highlight, making it a prime fueling point for regional and interstate trucking, as well as local fleets that frequently use the highway. This connectivity streamlines logistics and reduces travel time for drivers.
24/7 Public Access (Likely): While not explicitly stated in the provided reviews, Clean Energy Fuels stations designed for fleets often operate around the clock, providing constant accessibility, which is a major benefit for commercial operations with varying schedules.
However, it is also important to address challenges or areas for improvement highlighted by customer feedback:
Pump Reliability and Speed: A notable concern raised by a user is that "Out of the 4 pumps there 2 have been out of service for at least a month." Additionally, the remaining pumps were described as loading fuel at a "ridiculous low rate" and stopping prematurely after about 10 minutes, despite the screen indicating continued fueling. This indicates potential issues with pump maintenance and operational efficiency, which can cause significant delays for drivers, particularly those on a tight schedule.
Screen Messaging Issues: The discrepancy between the pump's display message ("pump is still fueling") and the actual cessation of fuel flow is a functional issue that can lead to confusion and frustration for users.
These operational issues, particularly pump downtime and slow fueling rates, are critical considerations for fleet operators who rely on consistent and efficient service.
As a specialized fuel provider, Clean Energy Fuels' promotions often differ from those of conventional gasoline stations. Their focus is typically on encouraging the adoption and consistent use of natural gas fuels for fleets and commercial operations. While specific short-term promotions for individual drivers might not be as common, the core "offers" from Clean Energy Fuels are generally structured around long-term value and partnerships:
Fleet Fueling Contracts: Clean Energy Fuels frequently offers customized fueling contracts for businesses and municipalities operating natural gas vehicle fleets. These contracts can include preferential pricing, dedicated fueling accounts, and support services to manage their fuel consumption.
Renewable Natural Gas (RNG) Benefits: A significant "promotion" for fleets is the environmental and economic benefit of using RNG. RNG can qualify for various federal, state, and local incentives (e.g., LCFS credits in California, or other clean air grants in Connecticut), which can substantially lower the overall cost of fuel and operations. Clean Energy Fuels often helps customers navigate these grant and incentive opportunities.
Station Development Partnerships: For larger entities, Clean Energy Fuels may offer partnerships for developing on-site or dedicated fueling stations, which can come with tailored financial arrangements and support.
Sustainability Reporting: For companies focused on ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) goals, Clean Energy Fuels' offerings of RNG provide a significant "promotional" benefit in terms of verifiable carbon emission reductions, which can be valuable for corporate sustainability reports.
Direct discounts for walk-up customers, similar to gasoline loyalty programs, are less common for a specialized station like this. Businesses interested in transitioning to or expanding their natural gas fleet should directly contact Clean Energy Fuels via their general contact number (866) 809-4869 to discuss potential programs, incentives, and tailored fueling solutions that could benefit their operations in Connecticut.

Clean Energy Fuels Customer Reviews
I have been going to this station over the last 3 months. My last time was just today. Out of the 4 pumps there 2 have been out of service for at least a month. My experience with them this morning was the same as usual. The pumps loaded fuel at an ridiculous low rate and then stop fueling after a few about 10mins. The screen gives the message that the pump is still fueling although everything has stopped.
