Steer & Gear Inc. Introduce

Steer & Gear Inc. stands out as a unique and highly specialized "Auto Repair Station" within the automotive industry. Unlike a general repair shop, Steer & Gear Inc. focuses exclusively on one critical component: steering units. Established in 1979 in Central Ohio, this family-owned and operated business has built its reputation on the custom remanufacturing of steering units for a wide array of vehicles, including cars, trucks, commercial fleets, dealerships, and even antique and classic automobiles. Their foundational principle, stemming from the early days in founders Jerry and Suzi's garage in 1977, was to recognize the value in "cores" – old, used steering units that could be expertly rebuilt to provide a high-quality, yet more affordable, alternative to new replacements.

The environment of Steer & Gear Inc. is that of a dedicated remanufacturing facility, equipped for precision work on complex steering components. While they operate a retail store for local customers in Central Ohio, their primary operational "environment" is their specialized workshop where expert technicians meticulously dismantle, inspect, repair, and reassemble steering units. This is not a typical garage where you might pull in for an oil change; instead, it is a highly focused environment designed for intricate mechanical work. The emphasis is on craftsmanship and technical expertise, ensuring each remanufactured unit meets stringent quality standards. Despite being a specialized operation, they welcome both local customers and engage in national and international shipping, meaning their "environment" extends globally through their logistical capabilities.

The services and goods offered by Steer & Gear Inc. are singularly concentrated on steering mechanisms. As an "Auto Repair Station" in this specialized niche, they provide a range of solutions that are vital for vehicle safety and performance:

  • Custom Remanufacturing of Steering Units: This is their core service. They take existing steering unit cores and rebuild them to function like new or even better, offering a cost-effective and environmentally friendly alternative to purchasing new parts. This includes various types of steering gears and power steering pumps.
  • Core Exchange Program: Customers can send in their old steering unit as a "core" for a refund on a deposit, or purchase a remanufactured unit directly from Steer & Gear's stock. This system supports the recycling and remanufacturing process.
  • Technical Support: A significant service offering is their comprehensive technical support. They provide guidance to customers through the complexities of the remanufacturing process, helping with budgeting, achieving desired standards, and recommending appropriate restoration methods. This is particularly valuable for do-it-yourself installers and smaller repair shops.
  • Parts for Steering Systems: While their main focus is on remanufactured units, they also deal with related components like power steering pumps, pump reservoir cans, pitman arms, and couplers with coupling kits, essential for a complete steering system installation.
  • Specialization in Antique and Classic Automobiles: This is a distinct service that sets them apart. They possess the expertise and resources to remanufacture steering units for older vehicles, which often require specialized knowledge and parts that are no longer readily available.
  • Delivery Services: For their local customers in Central Ohio, Steer & Gear offers free delivery of remanufactured units, along with services like pump reservoir can and pitman arm changes, enhancing convenience for local repair shops and individuals.
  • Global Shipping: They welcome telephone orders and ship their remanufactured steering units to customers worldwide, demonstrating their reach beyond local boundaries.

Several features make Steer & Gear Inc. stand out within the automotive repair landscape:

  • Specialization and Expertise: Their singular focus on steering units for over four decades has cultivated deep expertise in this complex area. This specialization allows them to achieve a high level of quality and precision that general repair shops might not match for these specific components.
  • Family-Owned and Operated: Now run by Jerry and Suzi's daughter Linda, son-in-law Carmen, and their son Chad, the business maintains a personal touch and a long-standing commitment to quality and customer satisfaction, often associated with multi-generational family enterprises.
  • Cost-Effective Solutions: By remanufacturing cores, they provide a more economical option compared to purchasing brand-new steering units, which can be a significant cost saving for customers.
  • Quality and Durability: Despite being remanufactured, Steer & Gear aims for high-quality, durable products. Customer testimonials, though not extensive in publicly available reviews, often praise the improved feel and longevity of their remanufactured units, particularly for specific vehicle models like Ford F-series trucks. Some reviews on independent forums mention satisfaction with "Redhead steering boxes" which are associated with their work, indicating a good reputation for performance.
  • Customer-Centric Approach: Their commitment to technical support, working with customer budgets, and guiding them through the remanufacturing process highlights a strong customer-centric philosophy. They emphasize satisfying customer standards and recommending the best procedures.
  • Support for Niche Markets: Their dedication to antique and classic automobiles fills a crucial gap in the market, providing essential parts for enthusiasts and restorers who struggle to find original or high-quality replacement steering components.

In terms of promotional information, Steer & Gear Inc. primarily leverages its long-standing reputation for quality and specialization. While specific seasonal sales or large-scale advertising campaigns are not prominently featured, their promotional efforts are embedded in their core value proposition:

  • Value Proposition of Remanufacturing: The fundamental promotion is the promise of a "less expensive, high quality option to new steering unit replacements." This message directly appeals to cost-conscious consumers and repair shops seeking reliable alternatives.
  • **"Custom" and "Fine-Tuned" Solutions:** The use of terms like "custom remanufactured" implies a tailored approach that goes beyond off-the-shelf parts, suggesting a superior fit and performance.
  • Technical Support as an Added Value: Offering free technical support for local customers and guidance for others serves as a significant promotional tool, reassuring customers that they won't be left to figure out complex installations alone.
  • Expertise and Experience: Highlighting their decades of experience and specialized knowledge in steering units positions them as authorities in their field, building trust and confidence among potential customers.
  • Word-of-Mouth and Niche Community Endorsement: Given their specialization, especially in classic and performance vehicles, positive experiences shared within enthusiast communities are likely a powerful form of promotion, as evidenced by positive comments found on enthusiast forums discussing steering box options like "Redhead."
  • Accessibility: Welcoming telephone orders and shipping worldwide, alongside local delivery services, promotes their accessibility to a broad customer base, removing geographical barriers.

In summary, Steer & Gear Inc. is not a conventional "Auto Repair Station" but rather a highly specialized and respected remanufacturing facility dedicated to steering units. Their environment is one of precision craftsmanship, their services are laser-focused on remanufacturing and technical support, and their features emphasize quality, cost-effectiveness, and a strong customer-first approach, particularly for niche markets like classic car enthusiasts. Their promotional strategy revolves around the inherent value of their specialized, high-quality remanufactured products and their commitment to customer satisfaction and support.

Steer & Gear Inc. Customer Reviews

Let me start by saying I'am a former customer of theirs. I had a power steering pump and pitman arm serviced here. I spoke with Chad about resealing the can on my pump; and to make it with their while; also redo my pitman arm from my Dart GTS. The pump I sent in had been powder coated the correct black and the finish was excellent. They blasted all of that off which was not required for the resealing of the pump. They also destroyed the original phosphate finish on my pitman arm by blasting it. It was very clean; and again totally not necessary. When I received my parts back I was horrfied! The pump has flat cheap paint that was bubbled in multiple spots and appeared as though a kindergarten child had painted it. The pitman arm and the pump paint also seemed tacky still. I would expect better from a company that specializes in this type of work. I sent in two very nice looking parts and they have ruined them for me. They have taken for granted the amount of pride people show in their own cars and not showing it in their work. Not acceptable. Steering & Gear will hide behind untrue assumptions and not face the facts. I recommend if you have a car / parts that means something to you; Stay Away! They are not the only game in town. Very disappointed! REPLY***The pump and pitman arm delivered finished products showed absolutely no pride! I can order an over the counter replacement that has better paint. As far as the pitman arm; Chrysler did not paint them. Why are you? And yes you did offer to repaint. In the same cheap; wrong color paint. I spent good money to powder coat. You ruined both my parts. I sent in nicarts and they returned them ugly. Absolutely no integrity here.***

The customer service of this company is very poor. After much wasted time, I had to go with another company. I contacted Steer&Gear by phone to order a Mopar power steering gear with the "Modern" firm feel and stops for use with a fast ratio Pitman arm. I spoke to Carmen, who seemed familiar with the application. I was told it would be a few weeks for them to build a gear to those specifications and ship it to me, then I could return my core to them. For my project stage, the timing was okay, so I placed the order. Shortly after that I received an email with my invoice from Linda confirming that it would be a few weeks, and she would call for payment when ready. About eight weeks later, I had heard nothing yet, and was ready to install a gear, so I contacted them for a status. I received a reply from Carmen that my gear was in the works and would be ready at the end of the following week. I also got a message from Linda stating the same. Over two weeks later, I still had not heard anything and the gear had not shipped. I canceled at this point with Carmen. Oddly, he didn't seem to care. I contacted another company, had a firm feel gear delivered within one week at half the cost and no core required. The new gear works fine and the other company provided excellent customer service and communication.

Purchased an OEM Mopar box that Linda recommended as the “Modern” rating for a 67 Dart GT convertible that I use for cruising and touring - as my original leaked like a sieve and steered like I was driving on marbles. They actually had it in stock and I got it in 5 days. The cost INCLUDED a return label to ship the old core back. AWESOME. I couldn’t be happier. It drives great now and “feels” vintage but is so much tighter and smooth. Talked with Cameron also who gave excellent advice. I also purchased their “no blank spline” coupler kit and their rebuilt OEM pitman arm. It came already installed on the box. The coupler is TIGHT with the 2 shoes and not having the blank spline was a godsend because the car just had an alignment but to keep the steering wheel straight, I had to have the coupler 2 splines off. I followed the pre-prime instructions exactly and installed it from the top after first removing the pump and battery tray and rolling the 273 over about 2”. Absolutely, no installation issues doing it this way. Will definitely be sending Cameron my manual box for a rebuild for the 440 Cuda. Super happy.

I got a work order here for my steering and gearbox. There was misunderstanding on my behalf about the way the job is going to be. They work hard to resolve my issues and explain the job. These guys will get the job done because they care about everything.

Needed the steering box rebuilt for my 1946 Dodge. Searched high and low for a used one and a 75 year old steering box is a rarity so none to be found. so I took it to Steer and Gear and they were able to rebuild it. Their price was even lower than I was told others had paid elsewhere. Highly recommend!
