Griffin's Auto Repair Introduce
Located at 1542 State St, San Diego, CA 92101, USA, Griffin's Auto Repair operates as an "Auto Repair Station" serving the San Diego community. With phone contact available at (619) 234-7991 and mobile at +1 619-234-7991, Griffin's Auto Repair has a presence in the local automotive service landscape. This introduction aims to provide an objective overview based on varying customer experiences found online, highlighting both positive and negative feedback.
Griffin's Auto Repair boasts a long history in downtown San Diego, serving the community for over 55 years, establishing itself as a fixture in the Little Italy neighborhood. They aim to treat customers like family and offer a wide range of services for various makes and models, including foreign, domestic, and European vehicles, with a particular mention of vintage and classic VW models.
The online information about Griffin's Auto Repair presents a mixed picture regarding the environment and customer interaction. On one hand, their official messaging emphasizes a "neighborhood feel" and a commitment to treating "customers like family." They offer a climate-controlled waiting room, wireless internet, early bird drop-off, a local shuttle service to the downtown San Diego vicinity, and loaner cars, indicating an effort to create a convenient and comfortable experience. They also mention that Spanish is spoken, which can be a valuable asset for a diverse clientele. They are an AAA Approved Auto Repair Facility and RepairPal Certified, suggesting adherence to certain service standards.
However, customer reviews present contrasting experiences. While some positive reviews highlight friendly service, good communication, and professionalism, others describe negative interactions, particularly concerning pricing and diagnostic charges. One severe review details a confrontational encounter with a staff member named Dwayne regarding a diagnostic fee for a known problem, and alleges dishonesty in pricing and refund attempts. This discrepancy suggests that while the intent may be to provide a family-like environment, individual customer experiences can vary significantly, potentially leading to frustration and mistrust in some cases.
Griffin's Auto Repair, as a full-service "Auto Repair Station," provides a comprehensive suite of automotive repair and maintenance services. Their offerings are quite extensive, covering a wide array of vehicle systems and types. Based on their stated services and positive customer feedback (for specific issues), these include:
- Engine Diagnosis & Repair: This includes complex electrical issues, as evidenced by the successful diagnosis and repair of an intermittent electrical problem in a 1976 VW T2 Bus's ignition switch and EMU. They are equipped to handle engine block performance diagnosis and repair, computer diagnostics, and check engine light issues.
- Transmission Service: Both automatic and manual transmissions, including clutch repair.
- Air Conditioning and Heating Service and Repair: Ensuring comfortable cabin temperatures.
- Electrical System Diagnosis & Repair: As highlighted by the successful VW Bus repair, they handle intricate wiring and component issues.
- Complete Brake Service & Repair: Including Antilock Brake Systems (ABS).
- Suspension & Steering Repair: Including CV Joints and Axles.
- Cooling System Service & Repair: Addressing issues like radiator leaks, though customer experience with this service has been mixed in the provided reviews.
- Regular Maintenance Services: Such as tune-ups and oil changes.
- Factory Recommended Maintenance Interval Services.
- Pre-purchase & Used Car Inspections: To assess the condition of a vehicle before purchase.
- Hybrid Vehicle Service & Repair.
- Supplemental Restraint System (SRS) / Airbags Service & Repair.
- Traction Control Systems.
They also claim to use "only OEM parts for its repairs" and keep a "full stock of parts on site," aiming for most repairs to be completed "same day." Furthermore, their specialization extends to vintage and classic VW models, including Vanagons and Westfalias, which is a niche service appealing to a specific segment of car enthusiasts.
Griffin's Auto Repair possesses several notable features, but it's important to consider them in light of the mixed customer feedback:
- Expertise in Complex Diagnostics: One positive feature is their ability to diagnose and repair challenging, intermittent electrical issues, particularly on older or specialized vehicles like the VW T2 Bus. This suggests a high level of technical skill for certain problems.
- Broad Service Spectrum: Their comprehensive list of services means they can handle a wide array of car repairs and maintenance, potentially making them a one-stop shop for many vehicle owners.
- Warranty and Certifications: They offer a 24-month/24,000-mile guarantee on all work performed, which is a strong assurance. Being AAA Approved and RepairPal Certified indicates a commitment to certain industry standards.
- Customer Service Variances: While some customers praise the staff as "helpful," "knowledgeable," "friendly," and "professional," others report experiences of feeling "ripped off," being charged for diagnostics on known issues, and encountering dishonesty regarding pricing and refunds. This inconsistency is a critical factor for potential customers to weigh.
- Pricing Transparency Issues: The negative review highlights a significant concern regarding pricing transparency, where an estimate was significantly higher than competitors and a diagnostic fee was charged despite the customer already knowing the problem. This suggests a potential for unexpected costs or perceived unfair practices.
- Longevity in Business: Having been in business since 1959, and as a third-generation business, indicates a long-standing presence in the community, which for some, might imply reliability. However, this history does not necessarily guarantee a consistently positive experience for all new clients.
Griffin's Auto Repair promotes itself on its website with a focus on trust, fair pricing, and a "treat you like family" ethos, backed by a significant warranty. They highlight:
- **"Quality auto repair in San Diego at a reasonable, fair price."
- "Family owned and operated since 1959."
- "24-month/24,000-mile guarantee on all work performed."
- "ASE certified technicians."
- "Full stock of OEM parts for same-day repairs."
- Discounts:** AAA Member Discount and Military Discount are offered, with a maximum discount of $75 on parts and labor.
- Convenience: Free shuttle service, early bird drop-off, and a comfortable waiting area with Wi-Fi.
However, it is vital to balance these promotional claims with the reported customer experiences. The value proposition, as perceived by some, may include specialized diagnostic capabilities and comprehensive services, especially for vintage vehicles. Conversely, the negative feedback suggests that for new clients, the value proposition may be overshadowed by concerns about pricing transparency and potential overcharging. For prospective customers, it is crucial to inquire about all potential fees upfront, preferably in writing, and compare estimates with other shops to ensure competitive and fair pricing.
In conclusion, Griffin's Auto Repair offers a wide range of services with the backing of a long history and strong warranty. While some customers have had positive experiences, particularly with complex diagnostics, there are significant public complaints regarding pricing practices and customer service interactions. Therefore, potential clients are advised to proceed with caution, obtain written estimates, and thoroughly understand all charges before committing to services.

Griffin's Auto was able to diagnose and repair an intermittent electrical issue for my 1976 VW T2 Bus. It was having starter problems. Issue was with electrical wiring (ignition switch and EMU) and not the starter device. A tough one to diagnose. Bus starts up great now. Reliable again. Big thanks to team.

Do NOT go to this place. If you do get ready to get ripped off. I made the mistake of going to have them repair on my radiator. I knew that it was the radiator because I had my car checked out at the dealership and you could see the leak! The only thing I needed was an estimate. Other places could give me an estimate over the phone, Dwayne told me I needed to bring it in. I didn't have very many options because it was over the holidays, and this was one of the few places that was open. When I got there, they took took an hour, to give me an estimate. Dwayne told me my repair was going to be $1450. That seemed very expensive for me. I called 3 other repair shops. All three came in about a half price. When I told Dwayne, he told me that I could my car there figuring that I couldn't have the car move to another shop because of my mechanical issues. Unfortunately for me, I didn't get the estimate in writing. I decided to take my car to another shop. It was at that point Dwayne, explained to me they have to charge me a $100 for diagnosing the problem even though I came in and told him what the problem was. When I tried 3 months to get this refunded by the manager Duane lied to his manager and claimed he was only going to charge me 895. I wouldn't needlessly damage my car more for a measly $100 by taking it to another garage. Needless to say, they scammed me out of $100. After reading some of the other reviews, I see that this place has had many issues. Don't go here. They will rip you off if you are new client. If you are an ongoing client, they are probably ripping off as well.

Griffins was fantastic. I brought in my 1992 Volkswagen GTI to have them help me with an ac conversion from r12 to r134a and they are super helpful with all my questions, transparent with what they were doing and what they recommend doing, and flexible when it came down to how to move forward. I will 100% be coming back here in the future and can not recommend them highly enough.

Mario and the team have treated me like royalty at this shop. They are honest, precise, and thorough. They catch issues that can turn wrong later so you don't end up paying for expensive problems later. They are truly leading the automotive industry in San Diego. their prices are great, and they work with imports which Is why I bring my 2002 xkr jaguar to them. I recommend you keep your car in routine care with them, but also trust them to get you on the road with solid repair work.

BEST staff ever. These people know what they’re doing and the best part - they’re genuinely nice & reliable. Griffin’s took care of my car issue within 2 days (and I had pretty annoying problem to fix). On top of that, they communicated with me every step of the way and educated me about car repair along the process. I’m never going anywhere else… these people know what to do to get life-long customers. THANK YOU GRIFFINS!!! Need to pass a smog?? GO HERE.
