Auto Hobby shop on Nellis Air Force Base Introduce
For the local community around Nellis Air Force Base, maintaining your vehicle doesn't have to be a costly or inconvenient endeavor. Nestled within the base at 5982 Depot Rd bldg 840, the Auto Hobby Shop provides an exceptional platform categorized under Auto Repair Stations, offering a unique do-it-yourself (DIY) approach to car care. This facility empowers individuals to take control of their vehicle maintenance and repairs, providing the necessary tools, equipment, and a supportive environment to get the job done right.
Stepping into the Auto Hobby Shop, you'll find a well-organized space designed to accommodate various automotive needs. The primary feature that stands out is the availability of multiple lifts and bays. These allow users to elevate their vehicles, providing much easier and safer access to the undercarriage for tasks such as oil changes, brake replacements, exhaust system work, and suspension repairs. The convenience of working on a lift, rather than lying on the ground, cannot be overstated, significantly improving comfort and efficiency. It's important to note that these lifts and bays operate on a "first come, first served" basis, and the shop can get particularly busy on Saturdays, often resulting in a waiting list. Planning your visit accordingly, especially on weekends, is highly recommended.
Beyond the essential lifts, the Auto Hobby Shop is also equipped with specialized machinery to handle more complex tasks. They feature a tire machine and a balancer, enabling users to mount and balance their own tires. This can be a significant cost saving for those who prefer to purchase tires independently or perform seasonal tire changes. However, it's crucial to come prepared with your own supplies, particularly tire weights. Customer feedback suggests that stick-on weights, readily available from auto parts stores like Autozone, are a suitable option.
To ensure a safe and efficient working environment, the Auto Hobby Shop requires all users to obtain a "Shop Card." This involves a brief overview of safety procedures and instruction on the proper use of the equipment available. This mandatory step underscores the facility's commitment to user safety and responsible operation of their tools and machinery. The staff and volunteers at the shop are frequently described as laid-back and easy to work with, fostering a positive and helpful atmosphere. Their knowledge and willingness to assist can be invaluable, especially for those who may be less experienced with certain car repairs.
The Auto Hobby Shop operates on an hourly bay fee of $6, making it a remarkably affordable alternative to the often high labor costs associated with traditional automotive repair shops in the surrounding areas. This pricing structure allows users to take their time and work at their own pace without the pressure of escalating labor charges. As one reviewer aptly put it, the shop is a "great alternative to your driveway or paying high labor prices at shops around town." The tools provided on-site are considered adequate for most common jobs, and there's a noted ongoing effort by the management to further improve the available equipment, indicating a commitment to enhancing the user experience.
While the facility offers significant advantages, it's important to be aware of a few key considerations. The Auto Hobby Shop does not provide any parts, oil, or other consumables. Therefore, users must ensure they bring all necessary components for their intended repairs. It's wise to thoroughly diagnose the issue beforehand and procure all required parts and fluids before heading to the shop. Additionally, based on customer recommendations, bringing your own work gloves is advisable for comfort and hand protection.
It's also crucial to be mindful of the shop's operating hours and policies regarding entry and work cessation. To allow ample time for cleanup, no vehicles are permitted to enter the facility within one hour of closing, and all work must cease 30 minutes prior to closing time. Arriving with sufficient time to complete your intended tasks is essential to avoid disappointment. One customer specifically advised against arriving just 75 minutes before closing expecting to undertake a significant job like a brake replacement.
Some users have suggested potential improvements to the shop's operating hours, proposing an earlier start time, such as 9 am instead of the current 1 pm opening. This adjustment, they argue, would particularly benefit retirees and others with more flexible morning schedules, potentially reducing the pressure to complete work within the existing timeframe. However, despite these suggestions, the overall consensus among users is overwhelmingly positive. The Auto Hobby Shop is recognized as a valuable resource that can save individuals a considerable amount of money on car maintenance and repairs.
In conclusion, for those residing in and around Nellis Air Force Base, the Auto Hobby Shop presents a unique and cost-effective solution for your automotive repair and maintenance needs. With its availability of lifts, tire servicing equipment, and a supportive environment, it empowers you to take a hands-on approach to vehicle care. While requiring a bit of preparation in terms of bringing your own parts and adhering to the shop's policies, the potential savings and the satisfaction of DIY work make it a worthwhile facility to utilize. The ongoing efforts to improve the equipment and the positive feedback from existing users underscore its value as a key resource within the local community's Auto Repair Stations category.

Auto Hobby shop on Nellis Air Force Base Customer Reviews
Lifts and bays are on a “first come, first served” basis no reservations. Waiting list for Saturdays when it gets busy. MUST HAVE A “SHOP CARD” to work in here. A shop card consists of a review of safety procedures and a brief overview on equipment usage. Not only do they have lifts but they also have a tire machine and a balancer. You will need to have your own weights. Advise stick on weights from Autozone. The manager is making great progress in making this one of the best facilities to do your own work on your vehicle. Staff and volunteers are pretty laid back and easy to work with. BE ADVISED: No vehicles are let in 1 hour prior to closing and all work ceases 1/2 hour before closing time to ensure cleanup is done. (Don’t come an 75min prior to close and expect to get in and do a brake job) $6/hr for bay fee.

The shop is a great alternative to your driveway or paying high labor prices at shops around town. The tools on-hand are adequate for most jobs and they are working to improve them. I like using the lifts as opposed to crawling on the ground under my vehicle. The staff is nice and most guys there are knowledgeable and helpful. The dates and hours of operation could be better, say 9-7 instead of 1-7, retirees in particular would benefit from it. It would also allow for less pressure to complete work prior to closing. Be sure you have all your parts and oil and anything else you need as they don’t provide any. I recommend work gloves also. But make no mistake - It’s certainly worth your time to use this facility as it can save you a lot of $$.

I don’t know what’s going on or what happened. When I went there to check it out on Saturday afternoon, the Staff there wasn’t being friendly and accommodating. They seems very annoyed as I asked them about their service and the facility. However, they given other customers the courtesy but after shortly observing who they are it’s apparent that they only respected certain peoples and I wasn’t it. I thought they respect and honor Military but I never knew they could nick and pick who they want to treat some people a certain way. Very disappointed.

Outstanding everything. Jody and Leonard are the best people. Tons of lifts, fully equipped with tools and jacks and everything else you need. Extremely reasonable hourly price.

I brought my RV here for oil changes. Although I cannot fir into the bay, I was accommodated outside, and was able to use the tools. The tools were not well organized, and specialty tools were minimal, but I was able to complete the task and the shop was clean. The staff was exceptionally friendly too. Update: all of the previous observations are still accurate, but three of the lifts do not work. Not the best hobby shop I have been to, but it beats the driveway!
